Pope Leo expressed hope that the interim agreement between the United States and Iran would bring a lasting end to the conflict, saying “thanks be to God” as the two countries prepare to formally sign the accord on Friday.
Speaking to journalists outside his residence in Castel Gandolfo, Italy, the head of the Catholic Church said that while several issues still need to be resolved, dialogue and negotiations are preferable to a return to war.
Pope Leo, who had previously criticised the US-Israel war on Iran, said he hoped the agreement would serve as a genuine solution and ensure that the conflict is finally over.
“I hope that it truly is a solution to the war, that the war really is over, and that we can move forward,” he said.
