When Tim Cook retires in September, he’ll close a remarkable 15-year chapter of the Apple brand story. When Cook succeeded Steve Jobs as CEO in 2011, many observers thought Apple’s best days were behind it.

Few predictions have turned out so dramatically wrong.

Under Cook’s leadership, Apple became the first publicly traded company worth $1 trillion and the world’s most admired brand.

But numbers alone don’t explain Cook’s success.

If Steve Jobs was the greatest business storyteller of our time, Tim Cook was the most consistent storyteller.

The consistency was on display when Cook took his final bow at the company’s annual worldwide developers conference (WWDC). After Apple executives introduced new services, software, and AI capabilities for Siri, Cook ended the opening day’s keynote by saying, “Creating the best products in the world that enrich people’s lives has always been our North Star.”

The Difference Between a Mission Statement and a North Star The phrase “enriching lives” began appearing in Apple’s internal lexicon in 2001, shortly after Cook joined the company to run worldwide operations. MORE FOR YOU Steve Jobs and Ron Johnson, the head of retail at the time, were opening the first Apple Stores. In one interview, Johnson said, “The mission [of Apple Stores] is to enrich lives. It’s as simple as that.” That simple mantra left an impression on Cook who, upon taking the CEO role, began to repeat the phrase constantly and consistently. In one of his first interviews as CEO, Cook explained Apple’s philosophy and the vision that would guide his decisions. “We’re very simple people at Apple,” Cook told the Los Angeles Times. “We focus on making the world’s best products and enriching people’s lives.” Where most companies create forgettable mission statements, Apple created a North Star, and Cook wanted to make sure everyone knew it. By 2019, investors were treating Apple as a mature hardware company with limited growth prospects. Cook once again brought up Apple’s North Star to tell the bigger story of why the company was entering the health and wellness category with new products and services. In an interview with CNBC’s Jim Cramer, Cook positioned Apple’s ambition with products such as the Apple Watch not as a pivot, but a continuation of the company’s purpose. “If you zoom out into the future, look back, and ask the question, What was Apple’s greatest contribution to mankind?’ It will be about health,” Cook said. “Our business has always been about enriching people’s lives.”
