Two Airport Workers Die of Malaria After Mosquito Bites on Plane in Germany

Germany’s Robert Koch Institute (RKI) said an imported Anopheles mosquito carried into the country aboard an aircraft is the likely source of the infections. Unlike the mosquitoes commonly found in Germany, Anopheles mosquitoes can transmit the Plasmodium parasites that cause malaria. Airport authorities have installed mosquito traps across the facility. Captured mosquitoes will be examined in laboratories to determine their species and potentially establish where they originated.
