Trump posts moon ownership claim on Truth Social, White House casts him as superhero

US President Donald Trump claimed on Sunday that the United States owns the moon. He posted a photo of the moon on Truth Social with the words “The Moon is Ours” written across it. He added a US flag next to the image.Minutes before the moon post, Trump shared AI-generated images of new black uniforms for the US Space Force. He described the colours as “space grey, midnight black, silver grey, and satin black.” The uniforms had shoulder and collar insignias, sleeve patches and a belt.Social media users compared the moon claim and the uniforms to the Star Wars Imperial military. One user wrote, “Cue the Star Wars 'Imperial March'.” Another called the uniforms “definitely Star Wars Imperial army-coded.”A third asked, “Why stop at moon? What about Mars? Or even better, he should go to the Sun.” A fourth wrote, “Quick! How do we warn the Martians?”The Outer Space Treaty of 1967 says otherwise. The US and more than 100 other countries signed it. It states that no nation can claim the moon or other celestial bodies through sovereignty, use or occupation.In the same run of posts, Trump also claimed the Strait of Hormuz as US territory. Last week, he had suggested renaming it “Trump Strait” during the conflict with Iran. Hours later, he indicated he was not serious about the idea.Trump also suggested renaming the state of New Mexico to “New America.” He posted, “Many people suggested changing the name of New Mexico... to NEW AMERICA. So much more prestigious and beautiful for the people of that potentially incredible State. Wow, I Love It!!!”The White House backed the idea. It reposted an image showing “Mexico” crossed out and replaced with “America.”New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham responded on Fox News. She said the state’s name “isn’t up for debate -- it’s been ours since before the United States existed.” She said Trump wanted to “distract Americans” from issues such as rising fuel prices.The New Mexico suggestion followed an earlier order. Days before, Trump had signed a document renaming Lake Ontario as “Lake America” amid a trade dispute with Canada. He announced the move from the Oval Office on 27 August.Lake Ontario is one of the five Great Lakes on the Canada-US border. It shares its name with the Canadian province of Ontario and with New York State. Toronto sits on its northwestern shore.The name comes from the Wendat word “Ontari'io,” meaning “the lake is beautiful, great.” The name predates the founding of both Canada and the US.Grand Chief Pierre Picard of the Huron-Wendat First Nation criticised the rename. He wrote, “Outraged, appalled, shocked: there are no other words to describe how I feel following President Trump’s decision to rename Lake Ontario ‘Lake America’.”He called the move “abhorrent and unspeakable” and accused Trump of trying to “eradicate our history.”Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also objected. On X, he wrote, “The name Lake Ontario comes from the Wendat word Ontari'io, which, appropriately, means 'the lake is beautiful, the lake is big.’”Trump had renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” on his first day back in the White House in 2025. Mexico rejected that move. Canada also rejected the attempt to rename Lake Ontario.The moon and Space Force posts drew concern online.
