Among these six manufacturers, Tata has registered the strongest FY27 YTD growth at 50.73%, followed by Maruti at 35.58%.
India’s leading passenger vehicle manufacturers registered strong year-on-year growth in August 2026, with combined domestic sales of the top six OEMs reaching 4,13,329 units. This was an increase of 36.50% over 3,02,814 units sold by the same six manufacturers in August 2025.
Maruti Suzuki retained a commanding lead, while Tata Motors and Mahindra occupied the second and third positions respectively. Hyundai remained fourth, followed by Kia and Toyota. Five of the six manufacturers reported YoY growth, with Toyota being the exception.

Maruti Suzuki sold 1,76,971 passenger vehicles domestically in August 2026, compared with 1,31,278 units a year earlier. Sales increased by 34.81%, adding 45,693 units YoY. Among the top six OEMs, Maruti commanded a 42.82% share during the month.
Tata Motors ranked second with sales of 65,253 units, up from 41,001 units in August 2025. At 59.15%, Tata recorded the highest YoY percentage growth among these six manufacturers. Mahindra followed closely with 59,257 units, registering 50.40% YoY growth from 39,399 units. Hyundai occupied fourth position with 54,396 units, representing growth of 28.82% over 42,226 units sold last year.
Kia Moves Into Fifth Position
Kia registered 29,042 units in August, up 48.11% from 19,608 units a year ago. This placed Kia fifth in the monthly ranking, narrowly ahead of Toyota. Toyota sold 28,410 units compared with 29,302 units last year, recording a 3.04% decline. The gap between Kia and Toyota during August was just 632 units.
The monthly ranking is slightly different from the FY27 year-to-date order. Toyota remains fifth during April-August 2026 with 1,48,732 units, while Kia is sixth with 1,36,034 units. Toyota therefore continues to lead Kia by 12,698 units on a YTD basis. Kia is likely to get more sales momentum in coming months, thanks to new Sorento and upcoming Carens CNG and Carnival Hybrid.
August Sales Fall 4.28% MoM
While YoY numbers were strong, the top six manufacturers collectively recorded a sequential decline. Combined August sales of 4,13,329 units were 4.28% lower than 4,31,788 units in July 2026. Maruti accounted for most of this reduction, with sales falling 9.80% MoM from 1,96,203 units. Toyota was down 6.90%, while Mahindra slipped 1.32%. In contrast, Tata grew 4.22% MoM, Kia gained 2.99%, and Hyundai was almost flat with a 0.34% increase.
FY27 YTD Sales Cross 20 Lakh Units
During April-August 2026, combined sales of these six manufacturers reached 20,33,228 units, compared with 15,74,115 units during the corresponding FY26 period. This represents growth of 29.17%, with an additional 4,59,113 vehicles sold.
Maruti leads the FY27 YTD rankings with 8,98,402 units and a 44.19% share. Tata follows at 3,08,030 units, ahead of Mahindra at 2,94,050 units and Hyundai at 2,47,980 units. Toyota occupies fifth position with 1,48,732 units, followed by Kia at 1,36,034 units. Among these six manufacturers, Tata has registered the strongest FY27 YTD growth at 50.73%, followed by Maruti at 35.58%.
Overall, August shows strong YoY momentum across most of India’s leading carmakers, even as sequential sales softened compared with July. The FY27 YTD numbers remain firmly positive, with all six OEMs reporting growth over the corresponding period last year.
