Reliable Used Cars: Maruti Suzuki Baleno

The base variants of the facelift model, or the top-end variants of the pre-facelift version, would be available at this price point. The maintenance and servicing costs for the Baleno are quite affordable, and the reliability of the 1.2-litre NA petrol engine is as good as it gets. Not to mention, it is a Maruti, so the after-sales network is pretty extensive.

However, you should keep in mind that the lower-spec variants of the Baleno came equipped with just two airbags. Try finding the top-end Zeta/Alpha variants if you prioritise safety more.

Hyundai Grand i10 Nios

You can find a mid-variant (Sportz) Hyundai Grand i10 Nios, which is under warranty, at this price point. With the Sportz variant, you get crucial features like automatic climate control, six airbags, an infotainment screen with wireless Android Auto & Apple CarPlay, a reverse parking camera, and more.

More importantly, the i10 is affordable to maintain, and the 1.2-litre NA petrol rarely causes trouble. It may not be the most fun to drive, but it’s a sensible buy on a tight budget.

Reliable Used Cars: Maruti Suzuki Ciaz

With the Ciaz, you get the practicality of a sedan and the reliability of a Maruti. The Ciaz doesn’t retain its value as well as other Maruti models, which means that you can grab the top-end Alpha variant for a good price. For the later models, the 1.5-litre NA petrol engine was introduced, and it is the ideal choice if you are considering the Ciaz. The spares for this engine are readily available as it shares the engine with the outgoing Ertiga and Brezza. The Ciaz is arguably the most sensible pick under Rs. 5 lakh.

Nissan Magnite

The Magnite is one of the rare Japanese SUVs whose value doesn’t hold well. The result is cheap deals on a used model. Multiple models on the marketplace are still under the original warranty and cheaper than the five lakh mark. Getting a top-end model would still be tough, but you can easily get your hands on the AMT version.

However, there are a few things you should consider. While the engine isn’t necessarily unreliable, it isn’t as fuel-efficient as other cars on the list. Moreover, Nissan’s service network leaves a lot to be desired. Furthermore, the base variants of the Magnite (before 2024) came equipped with just two airbags.

Reliable Used Cars: Honda Amaze

Honda has always been synonymous with reliability. And instead of settling for an old City, you could get an under-warranty Amaze for less. But if you want it with a CVT, you would have to settle for an older model. The 1.2-litre i-VTEC engine is a delight for your wallet, and it is unlikely to cause any trouble. The lower variants of the Amaze are quite bare-bones, and you would have to exceed the budget if you wish for the top-end model.
