West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday (June 29, 2026) promised action against Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) leader and Nowda MLA Humayun Kabir for alleged provocative remarks.
“I will not allow him to speak in such a threatening manner.... This is going to be his last such remark,” Mr. Adhikari said on the floor of West Bengal Legislative Assembly.
The Chief Minister said that three cases have been registered against the MLA - two at Rejinagar police station and one at Shaktipur police station.
“I feel enough is enough. Time has come to teach him a lesson,” the Chief Minister said.
Mr. Adhikari said that in the past, Mr. Kabir could get away with such remarks because there was a “weak” Chief Minister. He said the remark was made to consolidate Muslim electorate at Rejinagar seat, which has been vacated by the MLA since he won from two seats.
Two BJP MLAs had raised point of order on the comments made by Mr. Kabir and sought the Chief Minister’s response in the House earlier in the day.
On June 26, the MLA held a public meeting at Rejinagar where he had threatened the BJP leadership.
“The day I mobilise thousands of Muslims and take to the streets, I will strike so hard that there won’t be anyone left to even carry your party flag,” Mr. Kabir had said. Earlier, on June 6, he had made remarks directed at a police officer in Shaktipur.
The AJUP founder has a history of making provocative remarks in the past. Responding to the Chief Minister’s statement, Mr. Kabir said that his remarks were not directed at him.
