This Bollywood Star Cheated On His Pregnant Wife, She Lost Their Baby, Then He Sent Her Rs 25,000

Not every Bollywood love story gets a happy ending... this one ended with an affair, a broken marriage and an apology that came years too late.

Seema Kapoor recalled how her marriage to Om Puri ended after he fell in love with another woman.

Sometimes, the biggest heartbreaks in Bollywood don’t happen on screen. One veteran actor’s marriage fell apart in the most painful way after he fell in love with someone else while his wife was pregnant.

We’re talking about veteran actor Om Puri’s first wife, Seema Kapoor. She had once spoke about how her eight-month marriage to the late actor came crashing down after he got involved with another woman, leaving her to deal with heartbreak while expecting their child.

According to Seema, everything changed when Om Puri was shooting City of Joy. Looking back at that period, she told Siddharth Kanan, “Everything was going fine after our marriage, but that movie turned my life upside down." It was during the film that Puri met journalist Nandita, whom he later married and had a son with.

What made the situation even more painful was that several people around her already knew. Seema revealed that close friends, including editor Renu Saluja and filmmaker Sudhir Mishra, were aware of the affair but chose not to tell her because they believed it wasn’t serious.

“My good friend Renu Saluja, Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s first wife, knew about the affair. But she and Sudhir Mishra and everyone else did not tell me much about what was happening thinking that it was not that serious after all," she recalled.

The truth finally came out while Seema was in Delhi. Om Puri called her himself and admitted he was seeing someone else. “He called me up and told me that he was seeing someone else, and my friends said that he was just seeking attention," she said. But she could sense from his voice that this wasn’t just another argument.

Even after returning to Mumbai, Seema hoped they could save their marriage. That hope disappeared when she found love letters among his belongings.

“I was shattered. I never wanted to divorce him, despite the affair. I wanted to mend things, because I was pregnant. He knew I was pregnant, but this was a source of insecurity for Nandita… things became overwhelming; Puri sahab would drink too much, and Nandita would make a scene," she said.

Despite wanting to make the marriage work, Seema eventually realised she had to walk away. “One night, I decided that it was best to leave. I still thought everything would be okay… that he would miss me… It was not easy," she recalled. She was three months pregnant at the time, but sadly, the baby did not survive.

The heartbreak didn’t end there. Instead of meeting her or comforting her after the loss, Om Puri sent Rs 25,000 through his secretary, but Seema refused to accept. “Forget consoling me. He sent Rs 25,000 via his secretary. I turned it down, and his secretary told me, ‘This ego is what is destroying you’. But what he thought was ego was just self-respect," she said.

Seema also revealed that her brother, actor Annu Kapoor, wanted to take legal action. She eventually received Rs 6 lakh as alimony, but said no amount of money could make up for the emotional pain she had gone through.

Years later, shortly before his death, Om Puri reached out to her one last time. “He called me up and apologised to me for everything that he had done," Seema shared.

Om Puri passed away in 2017 at the age of 66 after suffering a heart attack.
