Based on this, on August 14, 2026, the Special Secretary of Higher Education Department wrote to the Commissioner of Collegiate Education, Director of Technical Education and Registrars of all State universities.
The Collegiate Education Department had consequently issued an order (dated August 17, 2026) to the principals of all higher education institutions, which was hurriedly withdrawn on Wednesday (August 19, 2026).
A directive issued by the Tamil Nadu Higher Education Department citing Chief Secretary M. Sai Kumar’s diktat, to several department heads asking them to take coordinated action to prevent students from participating in protests organised by the Left parties and the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) sparked off a controversy on Wednesday (August 19, 2026), prompting its withdrawal.
The directive was based on a part of the agenda of the Law and Order Meeting chaired by the Chief Secretary on July 28, 2026, a couple of days after the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan following massive protests by students at New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar steered by the CJP. The minutes of the meeting, distributed to various department heads by the Secretary (Public Department) on July 31, 2026, sought an action taken report to be submitted before the next Law and Order Meeting.

In another unrelated but strikingly similar in intent, a tahsildar in Dindigul was shifted out to Chennai following an uproar over his directive to seek details of all members of the CPI and CPI (M).
