Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that Iran and Oman will cooperate in the management of the Hormuz Strait, a critical energy chokepoint linking the Persian Gulf with international trade routes.
He added that this is in line with international law since the two countries border the strategic waterway and hence have the ‘natural right’ to make decisions regarding its management.
He rejected U.S claims that Hormuz should be treated as international waters and all ships have the right to transit the waterway.
Aragachi stressed that Iran’s Gulf neighbours would be included in any discussions regarding the Hormuz Strait, but the final decision would be made by Iran and Oman only.

He also said that Iran does not wish to impose a toll or transit fee on ships, rather a service fee for navigation and pilotage services in the narrow waterway, conducting search and rescues, etc., which would make shipping through the strait safe for everyone.
In a recent interview, Aragachi also mentioned that communication with Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is ongoing and that his directives are received “in due time” and are being implemented.
