Open your subscription list and count how many of those tools have a free alternative. Free software once meant missing features and clunky interfaces, but that's no longer true across the board. Today, five have reached the point where cancelling the paid version doesn't mean giving up the tools you actually use.

Microsoft 365 Personal runs $99.99 a year, and that subscription has to stay active for full access to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. LibreOffice covers the same ground with Calc, Impress, and Draw, all free and with no account required.

Compatibility used to be the real concern, but recent versions have largely solved it. Microsoft Office files now open and save without the formatting issues that used to make switching painful. LibreOffice 26.8, the latest release, also added a Paragraph Composer that improves how text flows across lines, making documents look more polished out of the box.

The suite runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and none of it touches the cloud. There's no AI built in, and nothing leaves your machine unless you send it yourself.

Thunderbird

Direct server connections with zero telemetry

Another piece of that $99.99 Microsoft 365 subscription is Outlook. A free web version exists, but the full desktop client with offline access and advanced rules still requires the paid plan. Thunderbird gives you a complete desktop email client with none of that overhead.

It supports IMAP, POP3, and native Microsoft Exchange email, which arrived in version 145. Exchange support currently covers email only, with calendar and contacts still on the roadmap. Thunderbird's own built-in calendar and address book fill that gap in the meantime, and a large library of add-ons lets you customize it further. The Supernova redesign overhauled the interface with a modern card-based layout and improved accessibility.

Some free password managers hold back essential features, such as limiting stored logins or restricting sync to a single device, until you pay. Bitwarden avoids both limitations by offering unlimited password storage across all your hardware alongside browser autofill for free.

Its security model is built around public transparency. The entire codebase sits on GitHub for anyone to inspect. Bitwarden undergoes annual third-party security audits, with Cure53 among the recurring firms, and the Applied Cryptography Group at ETH Zurich has separately reviewed its cryptography. 1Password charges $3.99 a month on standard annual billing and commissions independent assessments of its own, but its source code stays closed, so public scrutiny isn't part of the equation.

Bitwarden also offers an optional premium plan for $19.80 a year that adds vault health reports and emergency access. But for everyday password saving and autofill, the free tier already covers everything you need.

If video editing is part of your regular workflow, Adobe Premiere Pro's $22.99 monthly subscription adds up quickly. Kdenlive as an open source video editor drops that fee entirely while still giving you unlimited video and audio tracks on a proper multi-track timeline.

It reads nearly any format without converting or re-encoding first, so clips go straight onto the timeline. Color correction tools include a vectorscope and waveform monitor, and you can animate effects frame by frame using keyframes. For longer projects on slower hardware, proxy editing keeps playback smooth by working with lightweight preview copies instead of the original files.

There's also built-in speech recognition for generating subtitles automatically, though it requires downloading a Whisper or VOSK language model before the feature works. The interface doesn't feel as polished as Premiere's, and heavier timelines can get sluggish at times. Still, it's a practical choice for YouTube videos, social clips, and everyday edits across all major desktop platforms.

GIMP

Manipulates multi-layer graphics and raw photos

GIMP has always been free, but recommending it used to mean apologizing for the interface. The 3.0 release changed that with a GTK3 overhaul that finally scales properly on high-resolution screens. It also introduced non-destructive editing for GEGL-based filters, so you can tweak effects after applying them without undoing previous work.

Its 3.2 release in March 2026 added Link Layers, which preserve original source quality when you scale or rotate them, similar to how Smart Objects work in Photoshop. The update also improved PSD import and added SVG and PDF export. Photoshop's single-app plan, meanwhile, runs $22.99 a month, and most of its advanced retouching and compositing tools go unused by casual editors.
