Spotify is expanding its Running Mode for Premium subscribers on Android, introducing more ways to tailor music and workout sessions to individual running routines.
The feature, available in select markets, offers 25 preset sessions covering different workout formats and music genres. Users can choose sessions ranging from a 10-minute run to a 90-minute workout, with options including intervals, pyramid workouts, easy runs and longer, more demanding sessions.
The presets are available through Spotify’s Fitness hub. A 20-minute 'Just Run' option is also available for those looking for a simpler workout without a structured routine.
Music selection can be adjusted according to both genre and familiarity. Runners can choose from categories such as pop, EDM, country and hip-hop, while a discovery setting allows them to favour either familiar tracks or mostly new music.
Spotify is also adding more control over how playlists are generated. Through a “View prompt” option, users can modify the request used to create their running playlist using natural-language instructions. This can include requests for specific types of songs, such as bringing back tracks they have not played recently or limiting selections to songs below a particular length.
For runners who prefer to match their music to their cadence, Running Mode includes Beat Matching, which allows users to select a target tempo in beats per minute. Spotify says 160 BPM is the most commonly selected setting, while some runners target 170-180 BPM for a faster cadence.
An additional setting can automatically adjust the speed of songs to match the selected BPM. Users can instead leave the setting disabled to retain the original speed of each track.
Running Mode also offers optional English-language audio cues during structured workouts. The coaching feature can be switched on for guidance and encouragement or disabled so that the session focuses solely on music.
The expansion comes as music streaming services increasingly incorporate personalised recommendations and interactive features into fitness experiences. Spotify's latest Running Mode update combines playlist personalisation with structured workout options, giving users control over both the format of a run and the music accompanying it.
