Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened its advance bookings in India two days ago, almost one and a half months ahead of its release, and the initial response has been nothing short of phenomenal. The film has sold around 25,000 tickets worth Rs. 1.50 crore / USD 150K approx for its opening day so far, while the opening weekend sales stand at around 50,000 tickets.
Currently, advances are restricted largely to premium formats such as PXL, 4DX, and ScreenX, which are available only at PVR INOX and Cinepolis, and that too in a limited number of centres. A major market like Chennai has no bookings available yet, while others, such as Mumbai and Bengaluru, have fewer than 10 cinemas on sale. Other premium large formats in India, including PCX at Prasads and EPIQ, are also yet to open advances. The film will not be released in IMAX, as The Odyssey has four-week IMAX exclusivity.
Despite these limitations, the early advance is spectacular for a film still more than a month away from release. The very fact that there is urgency to book tickets this far out goes to show the anticipation that the film is carrying.
The previous Spider-Man film, Spider-Man: No Way Home, had an amazing haul in India, grossing Rs. 265 crore. This came at a time when the market was still recovering from the COVID pandemic and with strong local competition from Pushpa: The Rise and 83. Brand New Day arrives under far more favourable circumstances, with the theatrical market in a much healthier position. Moreover, Hollywood is carrying strong momentum in India this year, with multiple unexpected successes. Brand New Day is one which is expected to be big, and if these pre-sales are to go by, it should indeed be.
