Ms. Dev reasoned that her politics is in Assam, and while remaining in the Trinamool, she was unable to fulfill the expectations of the people of her State, since the party has no clear plans for Assam.
Within hours of her resignation, she met Assam Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma. Though she did not clarify that the meeting was the first step towards joining the BJP, Ms. Dev claimed that she met Mr. Sarma because he is the “best person to guide” her in these “uncertain times”.
She said that during her tenure in the Trinamool, she had put in her best efforts. Soon after joining, she was sent to work in Tripura, followed by Goa and then Assam. “I am unable to deliver the expectations people have from me while continuing in the Trinamool,” she said, while also adding that to deliver, one has to work with the government. Ms. Dev was seen defending the party till Tuesday (June 9, 2026) on various news channels in the face of the mutiny.
Speculations in Lok Sabha
Meanwhile, speculation continued about Trinamool’s Lok Sabha unit. As per reports, 19 MPs have signed the letter claiming ownership of the party. The list also includes actor Sayonee Ghosh, who was the star campaigner for Trinamool during the Assembly polls and dominated social media with her fiery speeches, many of them against Home Minister Amit Shah and the BJP. The list also reportedly includes actor Shatrughan Sinha, who had quit the BJP to join the Trinamool. However, Mamata Banerjee loyalists refused to react, in absence of a formal announcement from the rebel group.
