The Samsung Odyssey G6 monitor is designed for competitive gaming, so the 1,100Hz refresh rate is its key selling point. It comes equipped with a 27-inch IPS panel running at a native QHD resolution, a 600Hz refresh rate, and a 1ms response time, which is solid for an LCD panel. To reach the headline 1,100Hz refresh rate, Samsung implemented a Dual Mode feature. When activated, Dual Mode drops the Odyssey G6 to HD resolution while boosting the refresh rate to 1,100Hz.

Such ultra-high refresh rates will make ghosting a thing of the past and deliver OLED-like motion clarity. However, this refresh rate comes with significant trade-offs, with the reduced HD resolution being the primary downside. At a 27-inch screen size, even FHD resolution produces noticeable pixelation when reading text, but it becomes less pronounced when watching videos or playing games.
However, running HD resolution on a 27-inch screen creates noticeably soft visuals across all applications, including games. This causes overall fidelity to take a major hit, to the point where it may render the benefit of an 1,100Hz refresh rate practically moot. Acer’s implementation of a 1,000Hz monitor also relies on a 720p resolution via Dual Mode.

However, LG took a different approach. The company recently announced a new monitor that achieves a 1,000Hz refresh rate natively, without dropping the resolution down to 720p. Running at a 1080p resolution, LG’s implementation of a 1,000Hz refresh rate is how it should be done.
