It is, by all accounts, going very well for Samsung's new Galaxy Z Fold 8. It's breaking sales records, partially thanks to generous early deals, and now the company has been forced into making more units just weeks before Apple's rival iPhone Fold releases.

The original Galaxy Z Fold 8 production plan was 2.8 million units, already the largest allocation in the Z Fold 8 series lineup, which shows the company was right about how popular the passport-shaped foldable would be. The Z Fold 8 Ultra was planned at 2 million, the Z Flip 8 at 1.5 million. The additional 1 million brings the Z Fold 8’s total to approximately 3.8 million units. That means the wide Galaxy Z Fold 8 alone will account for over 60% of Samsung's entire foldable output this year. Why Samsung Is Making More Galaxy Z Fold 8 Phones The pre-order figures make the decision easy to understand. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 series recorded 1.44 million pre-orders in South Korea between July 28th and August 3rd, which is the highest pre-order total in Samsung smartphone history. Samsung tipster Ice Universe estimates that 70% of those pre-orders went to the Z Fold 8 specifically, not the Ultra or the Flip. That represents a 38.5% increase over the Z Fold 7 series, which also broke its own sales records. Interestingly, the Fold 7 also introduced a new ultra-slim design that used new space-saving technology. Foldable buyers are clearly hungry for new shapes.

Samsung Boosts Galaxy Z Fold 8 Sales Before iPhone Fold Release Apple is launching its own 4:3 aspect ratio foldable in September. These early numbers are obviously good news for Samsung, but also for Apple, because they show how eager buyers are for this foldable shape. The success is also partly engineered by Samsung because reports suggest that the iPhone Fold will cost between $2,000 and $2,400. Both figures are more than the $1,899 Galaxy Z Fold 8, which itself is $100 cheaper than the launch price of the Galaxy Z Fold 7. In the middle of a RAM crisis that’s forcing prices up, Samsung announcing a $100 price drop on the Fold 8’s predecessor is a marketing win that's only enhanced by an expensive iPhone Fold. Don't be surprised if we see some very aggressive Samsung deals in the run up to the iPhone Fold launch too. Samsung wants and will continue to steal away as many potential Apple customers as possible, and it looks successful so far.
