Red alert issued for 8 Odisha districts as well-marked low pressure intensifies into Depression

The well-marked low-pressure area has intensified into a depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal on Sunday. AdvertismentBoudh and Kandhamal districts have witnessed extremely heavy rainfall. Eleven districts have recorded excess rainfall, while another eleven have received normal rainfall. An Orange Alert has been issued for Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Kalahandi and Koraput districts, while a Yellow Warning has been issued for nine other districts. No Red Warning has been issued for the following day, though Orange Warnings remain in force for several districts.

The well-marked low-pressure area has intensified into a depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal on Sunday. The system is currently centered around 50 km south-southeast of Balasore and is likely to move west-northwestwards over the next 24 hours.

It is expected to cross the north Odisha coast near Balasore, between Chandbali and Digha.

Odisha has recorded above-normal rainfall during the ongoing monsoon season. From June 1 till date, the state has received 265.5 mm of rainfall, which is 4% above the seasonal average, according to Bhubaneswar Regional Meteorological Centre Director Manorama Mohanty.

Boudh and Kandhamal districts have witnessed extremely heavy rainfall. Eleven districts have recorded excess rainfall, while another eleven have received normal rainfall. Rainfall has remained deficient in six districts-Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Kalahandi and Nabarangpur.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Warning for the next 24 hours for eight districts-Sambalpur, Bargarh, Bolangir, Nuapada, Angul, Boudh, Subarnapur and Kandhamal-where heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is likely.

An Orange Alert has been issued for Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Kalahandi and Koraput districts, while a Yellow Warning has been issued for nine other districts.

No Red Warning has been issued for the following day, though Orange Warnings remain in force for several districts.

With the sea expected to remain rough till July 7, Local Cautionary Signal No. 3 has been hoisted at all ports across Odisha. Fishermen have been strictly advised not to venture into the sea until further notice.
