The 28-year-old is into the final year of his contract at Bundesliga side RB Leipzig, and is understood to be allowed to leave if the right offer comes in for him. The player is open to a move to Man Utd, but the asking price of around £30m is high for a player of his age and with his ceiling.
As a short-term option to find competition for Shaw, he could be a solid option for the right price, but United would need to negotiate the price down to make it worth their while, and also ensure that all their other options have been exhausted first.
4 Jorge Salinas - Racing Santander

At the other end of the scale when it comes to age and profile, Jorge Salinas is someone who has been linked strongly with a move to Man Utd this summer.
The Spain youngster has a €16m (£13.6m) release clause in his contract, but has also attracted the attention of Barcelona and Atletico Madrid this summer, meaning competition for his signature will be stiff. It's also fair to say that while the 19-year-old can play at left-back, his future is likely at centre-back, with comparisons to Sergio Ramos making sense.
Considering his age and price, this would be an ideal transfer for United if they view another target as being attainable in a future transfer window. It would also help future-proof the squad in more than one position, but his profile for full-back may not be what the club are looking for for Carrick's squad.

3 Alejandro Balde - Barcelona
Alejandro Balde has been linked with a move away from Barcelona for the best part of 12 months as the Catalan club look to raise funds, but there seems to be more to it in this window than in previous ones.
The Spain international was left out of the squad for the opening La Liga game against Elche this past weekend, and Man Utd are reported to have made a formal contract offer to the player ahead of approaching Barcelona, who value the 22-year-old at between €35-45m (£29.9-38.5m).
His profile is perfect for the modern full-back, and his age means he will only continue to get better in the future. But injuries have been a concern in his career, and it could mean that moves for alternatives are ruled out if he joins. A loan deal with an option to make it permanent could be the perfect solution, but unless Barcelona change their mind that looks unlikely to be a possibility.
2 Lewis Hall - Newcastle

The player would be very keen on making the move to Old Trafford, but a deal is likely to cost in excess of £70m, and that means next summer is a more likely timeframe for that to happen.
