The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Saturday (July 4, 2026) wrote a letter to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the alleged theft of offerings at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, urging them to examine several Opposition leaders who had publicly alleged financial irregularities involving the temple.
According to the letter, Mr. Yadav and Mr. Kejriwal alleged on social media that the theft of valuables and cash from the Ram Temple includes about ₹200 crore in cash and jewellery.
The letter also cited Mr. Singh’s public allegations that theft worth over ₹200 crore had taken place, and that more than 50 employees were involved.
Mr. Kumar argued that since these leaders had publicly attributed specific figures and details to the alleged theft, they appeared to possess the knowledge of facts relevant to the investigation.
“Will the VHP also ask the SIT to call VHP leaders, including Vinay Kariyar; Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, including Rajneesh Singh; and even the chairperson of the Ram Temple construction committee Nripendra Mishra, who too have made serious allegations of donation theft at the temple?” Mr. Khera said.
In the letter, addressed to Ashutosh Tiwari, Deputy Superintendent of Police and Investigating Officer of the case, VHP president Alok Kumar said that the statements made by public figures indicated they were “acquainted with the facts and circumstances of the case”, and they should therefore be required to assist the investigation.
The letter specifically names Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Prof. Ram Gopal Yadav, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal, AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
The communication additionally referred to Ms. Vadra’s reported remarks questioning whether junior employees alone could disable CCTV cameras and carry out a theft allegedly worth thousands of crores, suggesting that senior individuals may also be involved.
Mr. Kumar argued that since these leaders had publicly attributed specific figures and details to the alleged theft, they appeared to possess the knowledge of facts relevant to the investigation.
“It would be appropriate to require the attendance of the aforesaid persons... so that they may disclose the factual basis of the allegations made by them, the source of their information and all documents or other material in their possession supporting such allegations,” the letter said.
It argued that if the leaders possessed credible evidence, it could aid the investigation. Conversely, if they were found to have made serious allegations without any factual basis or supporting material, that too should form part of the probe.
The letter further stated that if the allegations were found to be knowingly false or reckless, the investigating agency could consider action permissible under law, adding that “the law will then take its own course”.
“How can the Sangh (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh or RSS) ask for proof of theft from Opposition leaders when the theft has been done by them (the RSS)?” Congress MP and chairperson of the party’s media and publicity department Pawan Khera said in response to the VHP’s letter.
Khera said.
