The rainy season may bring cooler temperatures and lush surroundings, but it can also lead to stiff muscles and achy joints as people spend more time indoors and stay less active. Himalayan Siddhaa Akshar, founder, Akshar Yoga Kendraa, author and spiritual leader, shares four simple yoga poses that can improve flexibility, support joint health and help you stay active during the monsoon.

1 / 6 Why Do Joints Feel Stiff During the Monsoon?

The cooler, damp weather often reduces physical activity, which can leave muscles feeling tight and joints less mobile. According to Himalayan Siddhaa Akshar, prolonged inactivity and reduced movement during the rainy season can affect flexibility and overall comfort.

"Regular yoga practice keeps the body active, improves circulation and supports healthy joint movement," he says. Gentle stretching combined with mindful breathing also helps relax muscles and improve mobility.

2 / 6 Pavanamuktasana (Wind-Relieving Pose)

How to do it:

Lie comfortably on your back. Bring one knee towards your chest and clasp it with both hands while keeping the other leg extended. Hold the position for a few breaths before switching sides. Finally, hug both knees to your chest and breathe deeply.

Benefits:

Pavanamuktasana improves flexibility in the hips, knees and lower back. It also supports digestion, improves circulation around the joints and helps relieve stiffness in the lower body.

Tip: Avoid pulling your knees too forcefully and keep your shoulders relaxed throughout the pose.

3 / 6 Tadasana (Mountain Pose)

How to do it:

Stand with your feet together and your spine straight. Distribute your weight evenly across both feet. Raise your arms overhead, interlock your fingers and gently stretch upwards while breathing deeply.

Benefits:

"Tadasana helps improve posture, strengthens the legs, lengthens the spine and enhances balance," says Himalayan Siddhaa Akshar. It also helps release stiffness in the shoulders, ankles and back.

Tip: Keep your shoulders relaxed instead of lifting them towards your ears.

4 / 6 Trikonasana (Triangle Pose)

How to do it:

Stand with your feet wide apart. Turn one foot outward and extend both arms to the sides. Slowly bend towards the turned foot, placing one hand on your shin or ankle while extending the opposite arm towards the ceiling. Repeat on the other side.

Benefits:

Trikonasana stretches the legs, hips, waist, shoulders and spine while improving flexibility, circulation and joint mobility.

Tip: Keep both legs straight but avoid locking your knees. Breathe steadily and don't force the stretch.

5 / 6 Vajrasana (Thunderbolt Pose)

How to do it:

Kneel on a yoga mat and sit back on your heels with your spine straight. Rest your hands on your thighs and focus on slow, deep breathing for a few minutes.

Benefits:

According to Himalayan Siddhaa Akshar, Vajrasana improves posture, enhances blood circulation around the knees and ankles, promotes relaxation and supports healthy digestion, making it an excellent pose after meals.

Tip: If you experience discomfort, place a cushion beneath your knees or ankles for additional support.
