Purchased a Mac Mini recently? You may get a free upgrade to Apple's new M6 model

The free replacement is not being presented as an upgrade program available to every M4 Mac mini owner. In other words, simply owning an M4 Mac mini does not appear to make someone eligible. The latest Mac mini begins at $899 in the US, which is $100 higher than the previous model's $799 starting price. The standard M6 Mac mini comes with 16GB of unified memory and 256GB storage. For existing M4 Mac mini customers, however, the important detail is whether their order is still pending.

Apple is making an unusual move with some Mac mini orders placed before its latest desktop launch. Customers who bought an M4-powered Mac mini but are still waiting for their computers to be shipped are being offered a newer model instead, without having to pay anything extra.

The change is being communicated directly to affected buyers. Rather than receiving the Mac mini they originally selected, some customers are being moved to a corresponding configuration from the latest lineup. Apple explained the reason in an email to customers: “Since your order has yet to ship, we automatically upgraded you to the new Mac mini at no additional cost.”

Who is eligible for free upgrade?

The free replacement is not being presented as an upgrade program available to every M4 Mac mini owner. Based on the customer reports, it is targeted at people whose orders were placed for the older machine but had not left Apple's fulfilment system when the new models were announced.

In other words, simply owning an M4 Mac mini does not appear to make someone eligible. The device needs to have been ordered and still be awaiting shipment. Customers who have already received their computers do not appear to be part of the offer.

There is also a catch for some buyers. While one customer reportedly received an earlier delivery estimate after being moved to the newer machine, another said the change delayed their computer by several weeks. The latter customer, who needed the Mac for studies, also claimed Apple did not give them the option of keeping the original order.

The upgrade could nevertheless represent a financial benefit. The latest Mac mini begins at $899 in the US, which is $100 higher than the previous model's $799 starting price. In India, the Mac Mini refresh comes with a starting price of Rs 99,900. Eligible customers therefore have a chance to receive a more recent machine without paying the difference.

What does the new Mac mini offer?

Apple's latest compact desktop introduces the M6 chip as its new entry-level processor. The chip is built on a 2nm process and includes a 12-core CPU, a 12-core GPU and a 16-core NPU for AI-related tasks. The standard M6 Mac mini comes with 16GB of unified memory and 256GB storage. Buyers can increase these to 32GB and 2TB respectively. Apple is also selling the computer with an M5 Pro processor, which raises the memory and storage limits considerably.

The refreshed machine also gets newer connectivity features, including Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. A faster 2.5Gb Ethernet connection is included, with an optional 10Gb upgrade. Apple has positioned the new desktops partly around AI workloads, showing off their ability to run demanding models locally. The company has also updated the Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra processors.

Both new desktop ranges are available for pre-order, with shipments scheduled to begin on September 22. For existing M4 Mac mini customers, however, the important detail is whether their order is still pending. If it is, Apple may replace the original machine with a newer equivalent model at no additional charge.
