Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu overturned a six-point deficit on the final day to defeat Fabiano Caruana 15-13 and win the 2026 Grand Chess Tour Finals. Caruana had taken control of the match by winning Tuesday's first classical game, while Wednesday's 95-move draw left him ahead 9-3. Pragg then won both rapid games to move into an 11-9 lead before scoring evenly with Caruana across the four blitz encounters to remain ahead on the scoreboard.
The Indian grandmaster, currently ranked eighth in the world, earned $200,000 for first place, while both finalists secured automatic invitations to the 2027 Grand Chess Tour.
The title adds another major success to Pragg's 2026 season. After a relatively modest start to the year, with 5½/13 at the Tata Steel Masters and 6/14 at the Candidates Tournament, his results improved markedly. In August, Pragg won the Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz after leading throughout all five days, finishing 1½ points clear of Javokhir Sindarov and posting the highest score in both the rapid and blitz sections. At the Sinquefield Cup, he finished tied for first place and lost the tiebreaker for the title against Wesley So. The GCT Finals title completed a run that established him as the overall winner of the 2026 tour.

Pragg began Thursday's comeback with white, damaging Caruana's pawn structure early in the game out of a Ragozin Defence. Although Black retained sufficient dynamic resources, Caruana fell increasingly short of time and Pragg eventually converted his positional pressure.
Caruana still led by two points before the second rapid game, but that advantage disappeared when Pragg equalised comfortably with black in a Rossolimo Sicilian. Caruana's hasty 27.e5? proved to be a serious mistake.

White eventually gave up a piece in an attempt to get counterplay by activating his rook. However, the plan did not work, as he had to resign shortly afterwards.

The first blitz game was highly unstable. Eventually, Caruana reached a winning ending, though the game ultimately ended in a draw by repetition. Caruana levelled the overall match score in the next encounter after Pragg faltered in a time scramble, conceding his first loss of the day.
Pragg regained the lead in the third blitz game. With only seconds remaining, he identified the decisive pawn break after Caruana blundered with 45...Bg5??
That left Caruana needing to win the final game to force further tiebreaks. The US star obtained promising chances, but an early pawn break allowed Pragg to equalise. Caruana then drifted into an inferior rook ending, where Pragg found a perpetual check to secure the draw he needed to get what turned out to be a 15-13 victory.

Wesley So also came from behind on Thursday, defeating Vincent Keymer 18-12 to finish third. Their two classical games had both ended in draws, after which Keymer won Wednesday's bonus blitz game to enter the final day with an 8-6 advantage. The players exchanged victories in the two rapid games, but So then swept all four blitz encounters to pull decisively clear. Third place earned him $75,000 and, more significantly for the following season, an automatic place on the 2027 Grand Chess Tour.
So immediately reversed the match score by winning the first rapid game, moving two points ahead overall. Keymer responded in the second rapid game, though only after 122 moves. The German star eventually converted an ending with rook, two minor pieces and a pawn against a queen despite So repeatedly creating potential stalemate tricks while surviving almost entirely on the increment.

The blitz section changed the course of the match. Keymer obtained a winning position in the opener but blundered with 28...hxg2? in a sharp position, when 28...Qxg3 was the only move that would have maintained his advantage.
So escaped, picked up a pawn and exchanged queens before converting the resulting rook ending. He then outplayed Keymer in a queen-and-knight ending in the second blitz game to extend his advantage.
So settled the match in the third blitz encounter, needing only 25 moves.

This win gave So an unassailable lead with one game remaining. The final game was nevertheless played, and So won that as well to complete a four-game blitz sweep and an 18-12 overall victory.
