Srinagar, Aug 6: Police in Srinagar have booked People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti for assault and rioting during a protest at Residency Road on the eve of the seventh anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370.

Her mother and PDP President Mehbooba Mufti, besides other party workers have been named in FIR for attempted to violate restrictions by blocking Residency Road, marching towards Lal Chowk, breaching police barricades, and obstructing security personnel deployed for law and order duties.
The FIR has been registered vide number 63/2026 Under Section 132 (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging official duty), Section 121 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from duty), and Section 191(2) (rioting).
Police docket maintains that personnel deployed near the PDP office along the Residency Road for routine law and order duties noticed a group of PDP workers, led by senior party leaders, attempting to move from the party office onto the main road at around 9 pm.

Police said the gathering was requested not to assemble on the main carriageway to avoid disruption to traffic and maintain public order. However, the FIR reads that the protesters did not comply with the directions and instead turned aggressive.
The police said that the protesters used criminal force against the deployment, obstructed officials in the discharge of their duties and pushed and manhandled police personnel during the confrontation. The FIR further says that several police personnel sustained injuries in the incident.
Following the scuffle, an investigating officer was deputed to the spot, medico-legal formalities were completed, injury certificates were obtained and statements of witnesses were recorded as part of the investigation.

Police said the protest was held at Sher-e-Kashmir Park on the evening of August 4 under the leadership of Mehbooba Mufti and Iltija Mufti.
They said that a section of the demonstrators attempted to violate restrictions by blocking Residency Road, marching towards LalChowk, breaching police barricades and obstructing security personnel deployed for law and order duties.
Police said repeated appeals were made by male and female police contingents asking the protesters to remain peaceful and comply with lawful directions, but some participants allegedly ignored the instructions and attempted to force their way through the barricades.
During the ensuing scuffle, police said that Iltija Mufti assaulted a police officer while he was discharging his official duties.
“She grabbed the officer and bit his forearm, causing a bleeding injury,” police said.
The injured officer was shifted to a hospital where he received treatment, including wound management, tetanus prophylaxis, vaccination and other medical care as per protocol.

Taking what it described as a serious view of the alleged assault on a public servant and obstruction of lawful police action, Srinagar Police registered the FIR and initiated an investigation.
Police have also issued a summons to Iltija Mufti directing her to appear before Police Station Kothibagh on Friday to join the investigation.
“The investigation is in progress, and legal action shall be taken strictly in accordance with law against all persons found involved in the assault on police personnel and obstruction of public servants in the discharge of their official duties,” police said.
The FIR comes in the wake of the PDP’s protest against the abrogation of Article 370 and the alleged restrictions imposed by the administration ahead of August 5.
While the police have placed on record their version of the incident through the FIR and official statement, the PDP has maintained that its leaders and workers were exercising their democratic right to peaceful protest and has disputed the allegations.
The investigation is ongoing.
