This powers faster on-device AI, including offline Gemini support and proactive suggestions that surface contextual information—like flight details—without needing an internet connection. Storage has also doubled to 64GB. The Galaxy Watch 9, meanwhile, uses Qualcomm's newer Snapdragon Wear Elite processor, which is a more modern chip but hasn't yet demonstrated a clear performance advantage in real-world tests.

Battery life is nearly identical. The Pixel Watch 5's 465mAh battery (45mm model) delivers up to 40 hours with the always-on display, while the Galaxy Watch 9's 445mAh cell (44mm) lasts up to 30 hours with AOD and 40 hours without. Both support fast charging, though Google's 30-watt adapter is sold separately.

The Verdict: An Iterative Upgrade, but a Familiar Dilemma

The Pixel Watch 5 is a refined, polished smartwatch that builds on an already strong foundation. The new chip, expanded storage, and AI-driven health features are genuinely compelling. But the $50 price increase over the Pixel Watch 4, combined with the fact that many of the headline software features—like Health Guardian and blood pressure trends—are also coming to older models, makes it a harder sell for existing Pixel Watch owners. For newcomers, though, the choice between Pixel Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 9 comes down to priorities: Google offers a sleeker design, better Gemini integration, and more advanced emergency detection, while Samsung counters with body composition tracking, a lower starting price, and a more established health ecosystem. Both are excellent smartwatches; the best pick depends on which features matter most to you.
