PhonePe enters micro-drama space with first Instagram-led series

PhonePe has launched its first micro-drama series on Instagram, signalling a new content-led marketing approach as brands increasingly move beyond conventional advertising and into entertainment-driven storytelling. The launch was announced by Kanika Marwaha, Head of Social Media Marketing at PhonePe, who described it as a milestone for the company and its marketing team. The debut series, titled "Passport Laapata", follows a group of friends dealing with the fallout of a farewell party that got out of hand. Built specifically for Instagram Reels, the series adopts the increasingly popular micro-drama format, which combines short episodic storytelling with cliffhangers and mobile-first viewing experiences. Brands across industries are investing in serialized storytelling, creator-led content, podcasts and web series as the lines between advertising and entertainment continue to blur.

In a LinkedIn post, Marwaha said the company's first micro-drama had gone live on PhonePe's Instagram page and thanked the internal team and agency partners involved in the project.

The debut series, titled "Passport Laapata", follows a group of friends dealing with the fallout of a farewell party that got out of hand. The first episode opens with a crisis: Sid's passport has gone missing just nine hours before his flight to the United States. After a night of heavy partying, the group struggles to remember what happened, setting up a mystery-driven storyline designed to keep viewers returning for subsequent episodes.

Built specifically for Instagram Reels, the series adopts the increasingly popular micro-drama format, which combines short episodic storytelling with cliffhangers and mobile-first viewing experiences. The format has gained traction globally as audiences shift toward short-form video consumption across platforms such as Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts and TikTok.

For PhonePe, the move represents a notable expansion of its social media strategy. Traditionally known for product campaigns, transaction-led communication and creator collaborations, the fintech company is now experimenting with original entertainment content to drive engagement and audience retention.

The trend is already reshaping digital marketing. Brands across industries are investing in serialized storytelling, creator-led content, podcasts and web series as the lines between advertising and entertainment continue to blur. Rather than interrupting consumers with promotional messages, marketers are attempting to build brand affinity through stories and characters.

PhonePe's choice of a relatable, youth-focused premise involving friendship, travel plans and last-minute chaos reflects many of the themes commonly found in successful social-first content formats. The missing-passport plotline also lends itself naturally to episodic storytelling, with each installment potentially revealing new clues and developments.

The launch suggests that PhonePe is exploring newer ways to stay culturally relevant among younger digital audiences. Whether "Passport Laapata" evolves into a larger content franchise remains to be seen, but the initiative positions the company among a growing set of brands experimenting with micro-drama formats in India.
