82 Cr opening day in India
Telugu film Peddi gathered USD 2.80-2.85 million (Rs. 27 crore) approx on its opening day overseas, including USD 2.1 million in previews from Wednesday. Combined with Rs. 81.75 crore approx from India, the worldwide opening day amounts to Rs. 108.75 crore approx. This ranks as the ninth highest opening for a Telugu film. This is the second Ram Charan film to hit the century mark, his first in a solo lead.
Breaking down the overseas biz: most of it came from the United States, at USD 1.77 million (including USD 1.45 million in previews). The next best was the United Kingdom at USD 325K. The Middle East and Oceania bring in USD 250K and 150K respectively. While the opening in India is impressive, the overseas is a bit of a downer. The premieres' grosses were fine, but Thursday could have been better. Still, the hope will be for it to pick up over the weekend, but at this low level, it can only go so far.
The Top Ten Worldwide Opening Days for the Telugu Film Industry are as follows:
Rank Title Year Gross 1 Pushpa: The Rule 2024 Rs. 256.50 cr. 2 Baahubali: The Conclusion 2017 Rs. 199.25 cr. 3 RRR 2022 Rs. 190.00 cr. 4 Kalki 2898 AD 2024 Rs. 161.00 cr. 5 Salaar 2023 Rs. 143.25 cr. 6 Devara 2024 Rs. 131.25 cr. 7 They Call Him OG 2025 Rs. 129.25 cr. 8 Saaho 2019 Rs. 116.00 cr. 9 Peddi 2026 Rs. 108.75 cr. 10 Adipurush 2023 Rs. 104.50 cr.
The top ten are now all Rs. 100 crore grossers, and that is where the business level is for Telugu films today. The Rs. 100 crore worldwide opening day is seen as a sort of benchmark for Indian films, and this film is just slightly short of that. However, a Rs. 100 crore first day for a Telugu film doesn’t mean the same as it does for a Bollywood film. A much fairer comparison is just to segregate Telugu films. At this point, for Telugu biggies, it's more about which one misses Rs. 100 crore first day rather than which scores. Chiranjeevi and Mahesh Babu are two A-listers who are not featured in the above list. For Mahesh, Varanasi is a sure shot to be in there, likely over Rs. 200 crore.
Note: Adipurush is a Bollywood-Tollywood crossover.
