Pakistan appears to be stepping up unmanned aerial surveillance along its western frontier with India, with Turkish-made Bayraktar TB2 drones being spotted in the broader border theatre, according to top intelligence sources. The development comes amid heightened India-Pakistan security tensions and growing reliance by both sides on drones for surveillance, intelligence gathering and precision operations.

The Bayraktar TB2 is a medium-altitude, long-endurance armed UAV capable of carrying out intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions as well as precision strikes. Its electro-optical and infrared sensor package allows operators to transmit real-time imagery and conduct persistent aerial surveillance.

For Indian security agencies, the concern is not merely the presence of an armed drone but the intelligence that prolonged surveillance sorties can generate. Sources say flights close to the Line of Control could allow Pakistani operators to build a detailed picture of terrain, movement patterns and surveillance arrangements along vulnerable stretches.

The deployment also assumes significance because the TB2 is not simply a reconnaissance platform. It can carry precision-guided munitions, meaning a surveillance sortie can potentially evolve into a strike mission if operational circumstances change. The platform has already been integrated into Pakistan’s unmanned aerial fleet, with the Murid airbase identified as a key hub for TB2 and other UAV operations.

The drone threat has gained greater prominence since the May 2025 India-Pakistan military confrontation during Operation Sindoor, when Pakistan used a mix of reconnaissance drones, loitering munitions and armed UAVs. Murid in Chakwal has emerged as an important UAV hub, while Chaklala’s Nur Khan airbase is a major military aviation facility near Rawalpindi. Rahim Yar Khan, meanwhile, serves as a forward operational base in Pakistan’s southern sector.
