No flop in 2 years; trade experts confirm that Akshay Kumar is back with a bang: “Aise hi unko Khiladi nahin bolte. He’s a master of the business”

In the post-pandemic era, Akshay Kumar faced a lull as several of his films didn’t work at the box office even though a few had positive word of mouth. However, the good news is that he has not delivered a single flop in almost 2 years. Sky Force, Housefull 5 and Jolly LLB 3 were average grossers, while Jolly LLB 3 was a semi-hit. As for Bhooth Bangla, it was a clean hit that showed solid trending. His recently released flick, Welcome To The Jungle, is also holding well at the box office.

Trade veteran Taran Adarsh said, “It’s so great to see Akshay Kumar back in such terrific form. He’s a fine actor and has proved his versatility. But box office is also important. Praises and critical appreciation are important lekin box office pe sikkon ki jo khanak hoti hai, usse zyada madhur awaaz ho hi nahin sakti!”

He added, “Akshay Kumar had Bhooth Bangla in the recent past, which was a non-franchise film. It was directed by Priyadarshan, who is a superb storyteller. He has proven himself time and again and with Akshay, his track record is magical. Bhooth Bangla was riding completely on Akshay Kumar’s shoulders. Welcome To The Jungle had a huge star cast, but this was primarily an Akshay Kumar film. Incidentally, in both films, he had a double role. So, it’s a double dhamaka for Akshay Kumar.”

Trade analyst Atul Mohan stated, “At one point, he used to give back-to-back Rs. 100 crore grossers. Seems like that time is back. Aise hi unko Khiladi nahin bolte. He’s a master of the business. He has bounced back several times in the past and he has done the same again. As an actor, he likes doing different kind of roles, but people love him in family entertainers, comedies and action. He’s in his element the most in such genres.”

Vishek Chauhan, owner of Roopbani Cinema in Purnia, Bihar, expressed reservations about the perception that he had a low phase, “Akshay never had a low phase. His films were not working and now films were working. Akshay Kumar is still the same; it’s just that his films have changed. Sunny Deol was always there. He just needed a correct film called Gadar 2 to make a comeback. So, the films go through highs and lows, not the actors. Even Shah Rukh Khan faced it before Pathaan. Now, Akshay Kumar will have two back-to-back Rs. 150 crore grossers. People are saying Akshay sir is back. But he never went anywhere.”

Girish Johar, producer and eminent film business analyst, noted, “His films were probably not clicking at the box office because there was overexposure. Secondly, the storytelling that he was associated it didn’t find resonance with the audience post-pandemic. It was not that people had stopped watching his films. But the content selection is what took a beating. Meanwhile, Welcome To The Jungle has resonated with the commercial audience. Hopefully, Haiwaan and his forthcoming films also follow suit.”

He continued, “He’s one of the very few actors who churns out 4 films in a year. That’s a commendable feat that no other actor can boast of in today’s times.”

Taran Adarsh summed it up by saying, “What an innings he has had! From his debut film, Saugandh, to Welcome To The Jungle, it’s great to see him keep going and continue scoring.”
