New Toll News
This will be done by installing barrier-free toll plazas with FASTag and automatic number plate recognition. While the government has been planning to introduce this technology for a long time, they have now finally announced a due date. According to the Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, this system is expected to be fully implemented across national highways by March 2027.
The minister also said wider use of the system could generate significant savings for the government and reduce motorists’ waiting time. Moreover, the government plans to make more than 70 percent of toll booths barrier-free by the end of December 2026, with the remaining target to be achieved by March 2027.

How Does This System Work?
It combines FASTag with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology for multi-lane free-flow (MLFF) tolling. Instead of vehicles stopping at conventional toll barriers, this technology identifies vehicles and enables electronic toll collection as they pass through the tolling zone. This setup was introduced at the Mumbai toll plaza in May, 2026.

The minister also said vehicles earlier spent around 12 minutes waiting at toll plazas and explained how this setup will help reduce that time.

Saving Of Fuel Costs
Adding to that, the minister also cited that reduced waiting and stoppage times would result in annual fuel savings of more than Rs. 5,250 crore.
