As part of its long-term strategic plan to expand its EV lineup, Yamaha has filed a design patent for a new electric scooter in Japan. While not officially confirmed, Yamaha’s new electric scooter seems to have potential for global markets including India. If introduced in India, this new scooter could emerge as the brand’s primary volume generator in the EV segment.

Design registration images of Yamaha’s new electric scooter reveal a contemporary styling approach. One can notice sharp, angular lines all across. While the scooter has a distinctive profile, it doesn’t try too hard to stand out. Overall design is comparable to other mass market electric scooters available in India and across global markets.
Key features include an angular front apron with distinctive grooves, dual headlamps and a V-shaped LED DRL. The headlights and DRL are mounted lower on the front apron. Other highlights include a translucent top cowl and angular rearview mirrors. Front turn indicators appear to have a compact profile and these are mounted in a recessed section on the side.
Yamaha’s new electric scooter is likely equipped with 12-inch alloy wheels. It has disc brakes at both ends. A decent sized single piece seat has been used, hinting at the scooter’s focus on everyday commutes. The scooter has a flat floorboard, ensuring comfort as well as unlocking space for carrying utilities. An integrated grab rail has been provided for pillion convenience.
There are likely to be storage spaces at the front and a USB charger as well. Tech kit for the scooter could include features like keyless start and a range of connectivity functions. A rectangular digital display is seen in the design registration images. Yamaha is likely to offer a range of exciting colour options with this new electric scooter.
Performance, specs
While Yamaha has not disclosed the specifications of its new electric scooter, some of its components speak for themselves. For example, the scooter appears to be using a centrally mounted electric motor. This setup is similar to that of the EC-06. Power is sent to the rear wheel via a belt drive system. In comparison, Yamaha Aerox-E utilizes a swingarm mounted motor.
Another important detail is a removable battery setup, positioned under the seat. This is something similar to the Aerox-E. In comparison, the EC-06 utilizes a fixed battery pack. Twin shock absorbers at the rear are positioned relatively forward, as compared to the typical position aligning with the rear wheel. This positioning could be intended to support the weight of the underseat battery pack.
At the front, the scooter uses telescopic front forks. While powertrain specs have not been revealed, Yamaha’s new electric scooter seems comparable to an ICE powered 125cc scooter. It is not known if or when this scooter will be introduced in India.
