Honda has officially announced it is developing a new sub-4m SUV. This segment is currently dominated by the Nexon, Punch, Brezza, and Fronx, and Honda will aim to capture a substantial market share. It would be priced similarly between Rs 9 lakh and Rs 16 lakh (on-road, Mumbai). Pricing will play a key role in the SUV’s success, and Honda needs to be aggressive to stand a chance in such a competitive market.

Details about the compact SUV still remain a mystery, and the only thing known is the launch timeline. Honda will be launching this compact SUV by 2028, along with another mid-sized SUV. But what can we expect from this SUV?

To take on the Nexon, Honda would need to load it up with features. Some of the expected features include a panoramic sunroof, an ADAS suite, a 360-degree camera, wireless charging, ventilated front seats, rear AC vents and much more.

Honda uses its Global Small Car platform for most of its compact models globally, and we expect this compact SUV to adopt the same platform. Moreover, it would feature Honda’s conventional design language; it could also borrow many elements from the Elevate. This could be a good move as the Elevate is one of the better-looking SUVs in the segment.

As for the powertrain, Honda currently has two engines to utilise – a 1.2-litre NA petrol and a 1.5-litre NA petrol. The larger 1.5-litre engine is unlikely to be offered on this SUV, as it would make it ineligible for the small-vehicle tax bracket. The 1.2-litre NA from the Amaze could be offered on the compact SUV. Furthermore, Honda could bring in a new 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine from its global models. Furthermore, demand for CNG SUVs is rising, and the Japanese automaker could meet this demand by offering a retrofitted CNG kit.
