New Mitsubishi Pajero Debuts 2nd Sep – Ladder Frame, Diesel Hybrid Likely

Part of Mitsubishi’s 13-model product onslaught by 2031, the 5th-gen Mitsubishi Pajero will be positioned as a serious off-roader

Mitsubishi has announced 2nd September 2026 as the global debut date for the all-new Pajero. Commercial rollout across global markets is expected in early 2027. As compared to the previous version that utilized a unibody construction, the new Pajero will return with a body-on-frame chassis. While specs will be revealed on the debut date, Mitsubishi has released teasers highlighting various features. Enthusiasts are particularly excited about the new Pajero’s return to its legendary Dakar credentials.

New Pajero performance

With its ladder frame construction and tech-based features, the new version could emerge as the most off-road capable Pajero model ever. The chassis will be a derivative of the robust body-on-frame platform used on the Triton pickup. It has also been confirmed that the new Pajero will be getting Mitsubishi’s S-AWC (Super All-Wheel Control) system from the Triton pickup.

S-AWC is essentially an advanced four-wheel-drive system that utilizes torque vectoring. It works by managing the front-to-rear torque split, ensuring enhanced traction and stability. Combined with braking adjustments, the S-AWC system is useful across both on-road and off-road environments. Reports indicate that the new Pajero could also be equipped with Mitsubishi’s Super Select 4WD-II transfer case.

This is already available with the Triton pickup. It allows drivers to easily switch between two-wheel drive, full-time all-wheel drive and low-range modes. There is also speculation about a dedicated off-road variant of the new Pajero. This would be comparable to rivals like the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado.

Powertrain options for the new Pajero are yet to be revealed. However, given that Mitsubishi has been working on diesel hybrid powertrains, the same could be introduced with the new Pajero. PHEV and full electric versions could also be introduced at a later date, based on the market. Multiple drive modes such as Eco, Normal, Gravel, Sand, Snow, Mud and Rock are expected.

Exterior, interior features revealed

Mitsubishi has shared multiple teasers of the new Pajero, revealing details about the exterior and interior. The Dakar connection is clearly highlighted with the sand-based theme used for the teasers. These images creatively depict the various features and the individual letters of ‘PAJERO’. Two distinct front fascia profiles can be seen, which indicate that the styling will be different for select markets.

Key features revealed in the teasers include vertically stacked, pixel-style lighting elements. These have already been confirmed with the test mules spotted earlier. Other features noted include a 3-gauge meter homage widget (on a 14.3-inch screen), semi-aniline leather seat back (S-EXCEED grade) and semi-aniline leather seat surface.

Enthusiasts have also shared a hand-drawn sketch, which shows the potential layout of the centre console and instrument panel. This sketch shows items like a 4WD dial, transfer case controls, shift lever (P R N D M), wireless charging area at the top and various buttons for hill descent control, rear differential lock, etc. Teasers also reveal the presence of ventilated seats.

For Asian markets, the new Pajero is expected to be launched in early 2027. While enthusiasts in India will be interested in the new Pajero, it is not certain if it will be introduced here. Launch in the USA is expected in 2030, where it will be sold under the Montero name. Mitsubishi will also be expanding the Pajero family with multiple smaller sized models. These are expected to use hybrid tech and could be launched around 2028 to 2030.
