Almost no movie in the world is building more hype than Marvel Studios' Avengers: Doomsday, which is expected to be the biggest movie of not just this year but perhaps the decade.
Now, if a new report is to be believed, the next Avengers movie's runtime could be seen by some as a bit of a letdown.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel Studios plans to start selling tickets for Avengers: Doomsday on Monday, Jun.
Additionally, the movie is reported to have a runtime of 165 minutes (2 hours, 45 minutes), but the report also notes that this runtime is not yet locked in.
Avengers: Doomsday will debut in theaters on Dec. 18, 2026.
Almost no movie in the world is building more hype than Marvel Studios' Avengers: Doomsday, which is expected to be the biggest movie of not just this year but perhaps the decade. Starring Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, multiple generations of live-action Marvel heroes will join forces as the Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, and more will have to figure out a way to stop Doom from destroying the multiverse and everybody in it. This sequel will also be directed by the Russo Brothers (Joe and Anthony), who have already directed four of the MCU's biggest theatrical hits.
One major question for Doomsday is what its final runtime will be, as the cast is already confirmed to include nearly three dozen characters, with more rumored to join them. Looking at recent Avengers movies, 2018's Avengers: Infinity War ran for 2 hours, 29 minutes (tied for the fourth-longest MCU movie), while 2019's Avengers: Endgame still ranks as Marvel Studios' longest movie ever at 3 hours, 1 minute long. Now, if a new report is to be believed, the next Avengers movie's runtime could be seen by some as a bit of a letdown.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel Studios plans to start selling tickets for Avengers: Doomsday on Monday, Jun. 20, which would be five full months before the movie comes out. Additionally, the movie is reported to have a runtime of 165 minutes (2 hours, 45 minutes), but the report also notes that this runtime is not yet locked in. This would make Doomsday the second-longest movie in MCU history, just ahead of 2022's Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2 hours, 41 minutes) and trailing 2019's Avengers: Endgame (3 hours, 1 minute).
Should this runtime be locked in, it would fall 16 minutes short of Endgame's runtime, which could be seen as a disappointment for MCU fans hoping for a three-hour movie. However, it does fall in line with comments the Russos made about a year ago, when they teased that Doomsday would likely be about two and a half hours long and 2027's Avengers: Secret Wars would be closer to three hours long. This would also be similar to what the Russos did with Infinity War and Endgame, although Doomsday and Secret Wars will ramp up the scale to levels never seen in the MCU before.
Thankfully, Doomsday's roster being separated into multiple teams should help give all of its characters enough chance to shine, both individually and as a team. With Robert Downey's Doctor Doom, Chris Evans' Steve Rogers, and Chris Hemsworth's Thor expected to be the biggest players in the plot, the mystery lies in how the rest of the film's appearances will be divvied up by runtime and role importance.
Avengers: Doomsday will debut in theaters on Dec. 18, 2026.
