The re-exam planned for 2,445 candidates who could not finish the NEET PG 2026 exam because of technical problems has now been challenged in the Supreme Court. The matter was raised before a bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant on Wednesday, September 2. The petitioner said that holding another exam goes against an earlier order of the Supreme Court.
According to PTI, a lawyer asked the court to hear the matter urgently. The bench included Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana.
However, the bench asked the lawyer to take the matter to the designated bench headed by Justice PS Narasimha, which is handling NEET-related cases.
“All NEET matters are before the designated bench led by Justice Narasimha. Go and mention it before that bench. Several developments take place in these matters,” the bench said.
NEET PG Re-Exam For 2,445 Candidates
The legal challenge comes shortly after the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) announced a second exam for candidates who could not complete the NEET PG 2026 test because of technical issues at two centres in Jaipur.
The NEET PG 2026 exam was held across India on August 30. As per official data, 2,73,096 candidates were expected to take the exam at 1,111 centres in 339 cities across all 36 States and Union Territories.
Out of these, 2,65,980 candidates appeared for the examination and 2,63,535 were able to complete it. However, 2,445 candidates at the iON Digital Zone Sitapura centres in Jaipur could not finish the test because of a problem with the internal power supply.
NBEMS later decided to give these affected candidates another chance to take the exam.
The re-examination is set for September 5, 2026, at 3 PM in Jaipur. NBEMS said the exam centre details and other instructions would be shared directly with the candidates concerned.
Why Has The NEET PG Re-Exam Been Challenged?
The petition has raised objections to the decision to conduct a separate exam for the affected candidates. The lawyer told the Supreme Court that this decision does not follow an earlier direction given by the court.
However, the latest hearing has not stopped or cancelled the re-examination. The three-judge bench only asked the petitioner to present the case before the designated NEET bench headed by Justice PS Narasimha.
Therefore, the September 5 re-examination is still scheduled to take place.
The issue started after technical problems at the two Jaipur centres prevented some candidates from completing the exam. NBEMS said the problem was caused by internal power supply issues and that steps were being taken to prevent such problems and provide affected candidates with a fair chance.
The designated NEET bench of the Supreme Court is now expected to hear the petition and decide whether any further action is needed.
