NASA Reveals Near-Earth Asteroid 1998 SH2 Is an Active Comet

This time, a bunch of brilliant astronomers introduced an unknown object to the world, which has been roaming the outskirts of our solar system for years with the wrong identity. For ages, this near-Earth object has been regarded as an ordinary rocky asteroid by scientists. Have you ever happened to look at the night sky and wanted to know what is beyond its horizon? It has often been said that space has surprises for us, and the recent reveal of NASA’s Asteroid 1998 SH2 proves that even the best scientists can be confused by space objects nowadays. This time, a bunch of brilliant astronomers introduced an unknown object to the world, which has been roaming the outskirts of our solar system for years with the wrong identity. For ages, this near-Earth object has been regarded as an ordinary rocky asteroid by scientists.

However, the findings show that this object is more than just a plain asteroid. Its looks have not changed, but experts revealed different behavior of the object in its orbit, showing a completely different story. The scientists made their discoveries public in Nature Astronomy, which resulted in a change in perception of nearby asteroids, proving that the universe has endless secrets.

The Hidden Puzzle of Asteroid 1998 SH2

An astronomical enigma was born in the last week of August 2025 at the time of regular observation. A piece of space debris, which goes by the name asteroid 1998 SH2, had successfully completed its flyby near Earth. Somewhere around three million kilometers away from Earth, the asteroid made its predictable flyby every four and a half years as it orbits the Sun. The researchers had plans to track the object with the sophisticated NASA Deep Space Network planetary radar system. The tracking scientists figured out the location of the object by reviewing historical data tracked earlier.

The tracking scientists had kept in mind the effect of the gravity of the Sun and the planets on the object. However, the object did not show up at the predicted location in the sky. It quite clearly missed its cosmic appointment. The unexpected situation raised a signal of alarm about something unknown transferring the object from its path of movement.

How Cosmic Outgassing Creates Natural Rocket Thrust

The space rock’s unexpected change of course led scientists to conduct an inquiry into the reasons behind such a deviation. Davide Farnocchia, a navigation technician from NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies, saw the surprising anomaly and came to the conclusion that the unusual turns didn’t conform to how a solid asteroid moves.

The object, in fact, behaved according to the processes referred to as non-gravitational perturbations. This means that something heated the ice, making it turn directly into the vapor. The Sun, in the case of this object, made it possible in order for the trapped gas to escape into space with a very small thrust. That enabled the body to behave as a comet, for example.

Powerful Optical Telescopes Capture the Faint Tail

The recent approach in 2025 was a great chance to observe the ongoing jetting. The researchers reached out to several observatory sites all over the world for direct assistance. They utilized the famous Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, located in Hawaii, and the Danish Telescope in Chile. These telescopes see features that typical camera instruments cannot. The efforts proved successful, allowing astronomers to take clear pictures of a faint tail coming from the body. This was the proof that this space rock is a comet.

Unlocking the Secret of Dark Comets

The discovery is great and provides explanations for a unique class of celestial bodies known as the dark comets. These objects, similar to P/1998 SH2, show fluctuations in their courses. But they are completely inactive according to the character of normal functioning. The authors based their opinion on the idea that a large number of dark comets can actually be regular active comets as soon as the right conditions are provided for them to be observed.

New Diagnostic Tools for Planetary Defense

Constant monitoring of near-Earth objects is an essential diagnostic tool in planetary defense. The identification of the tiny propellant helps us to understand how cometary orbits develop. All this valuable data has a direct impact on our evaluation of Earth impact probabilities in the future.
