Namma Metro Phase 3: Centre Nod On The Way — And It Comes With Bengaluru's Longest Flyover

2 / 9 What Is Namma Metro Phase 3? Phase 3 will add 44.65 km of Metro lines and 31 stations through two elevated corridors spanning western and north-western Bengaluru. The project includes a double-decker design along certain stretches, combining a Metro viaduct with a flyover to optimise urban space and improve road connectivity. These interchanges are expected to make cross-city travel more convenient and reduce dependence on road transport. 4 / 9 Hosahalli To Kadabagere: The second corridor will span 12.5 km with nine stations, strengthening Metro connectivity in Bengaluru's western suburbs along the Magadi Road corridor.

1 / 9 Namma Metro Phase 3 is moving closer to its next stage of implementation, with the revised proposal, including a Rs 9,700 crore double-decker corridor, receiving a boost after RITES certified its economic viability. The assessment pegged the project's Economic Internal Rate of Return (EIRR) at 15.9%, above the 14% benchmark typically required for Central appraisal. For Bengaluru's commuters, Phase 3 promises to improve connectivity across several underserved parts of the city while creating new interchange points with existing and upcoming transport networks.

3 / 9 JP Nagar 4th Phase To Kempapura: According to reports, the larger of the two Phase 3 corridors will stretch 32.15 km and include 22 stations, linking south Bengaluru with the city's north-western neighbourhoods. For commuters, one of its biggest advantages will be the number of planned interchange points, allowing passengers to switch seamlessly between different transport networks. The corridor will connect with the existing Green Line at JP Nagar and Peenya, the Purple Line at Mysore Road, suburban rail and Indian Railways at BEL Circle and Hebbal, and the airport-bound Blue Line at Kempapura.

The route is expected to serve rapidly developing residential and commercial areas that currently rely heavily on road-based transport, while also improving access to the wider Namma Metro network.

5 / 9 Why The Double-Decker Corridor Matters: A key feature of the revised Phase 3 proposal is the inclusion of a road-cum-Metro double-decker structure, designed to accommodate both a flyover and a metro line within the same corridor. The model aims to make more efficient use of limited urban space while helping ease traffic congestion on some of Bengaluru's busiest stretches. Despite the additional cost of the double-decker component, the latest RITES assessment found the project to be economically viable.

6 / 9 How Will Commuters Benefit? For Bengaluru's residents, Phase 3 is expected to deliver more than just additional Metro tracks. The expansion will improve connectivity across western and north-western parts of the city, provide easier interchanges between existing and upcoming metro lines, strengthen links with the suburban rail network and offer better access to the airport metro corridor through Kempapura. By expanding public transport options and reducing reliance on road travel, the project could significantly improve daily commuting. Areas such as JP Nagar, Mysore Road, Peenya, BEL Circle, Hebbal, Hosahalli and Kadabagere are among those expected to benefit from the new connectivity.

7 / 9 What About Fares And Train Frequency? Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has not yet announced fare structures or train frequencies for Phase 3. Operational schedules, service intervals and ticket pricing are expected to be finalised closer to the commencement of passenger services.

8 / 9 Phase 3 is designed not just as an extension of the existing Metro network but as a key link between multiple transport systems across the city. By integrating with existing Metro corridors, the suburban rail network, Indian Railways and the airport line, the expansion is expected to improve mobility and reduce travel times for thousands of daily commuters.
