The Motorola Razr Fold may be the first iteration of a booklet-style design from the brand, but it packs an absolute punch that left me impressed. Its design is a little unbalanced and heavy, but I felt this a minor shortcoming. Its raw power, combined with useful AI features and a nice camera set, make it an excellent choice for power users.

After testing for over a month, I determined that it’s a great phone for workers who want to customize their setup thanks to the robust software integrations. Still, one issue gave me pause. Keep reading for my thoughts on the phone’s design, performance, camera set and more.

Motorola Razr Fold: Design

Heavy Compared To Other Options, But Not The Heaviest

The Motorola Razr fold has a square-shaped, four-camera plateau that slopes across the back. It’s distinct and very attractive, but it’s also very heavy, weighing 8.6 ounces. It still manages not to be the heaviest: That goes to another competitor, the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold, which weighs 9.1 ounces. But I felt a distinct weight imbalance between the bottom and the top, and I can see that being a deal-breaker for some users. It’s also a little slippery—rest it on a slight incline, and this device slides right off a surface. Still, it didn’t show any scratches or marks after many, many drops. And the model I tested features a Pantone Lily White colorway.

The phone offers a 6.6-inch cover screen, and when needed, it unfolds to a 8.1-inch display. The thin build makes it easy to grip when unfolded. One feature that makes it unique in the foldable phones market right now is the integration of the Moto Pen Ultra. Unlike older Samsung phone models like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, the Motorola Razr Fold allows you to write directly on the screen with this digital pen, though it’s carried in a separate charging case. It’s also sold separately, at $100 extra. While in the case, press on the pen itself, and the spring unlocks it so you can begin using it. It requires a charge to function, but I struggled to determine the battery life. Ultimately, I just occasionally topped it up to make sure it was available at all times.

Motorola Razr Fold: Performance

Aimed At Lenovo Power Users

After using the phone for over a month, I found it to be an excellent option for those who want to focus on productivity during the day and mobile games after hours. In addition to playing demanding games on the device, I also benchmarked the device using Geekbench 6 software. Its processor is as powerful as other top Android phones on the market, including my current slab phone favorite, the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra. The software also offers plenty of useful extras. Open an app, and swipe your palm to the left or right to enter Split Screen mode. Additionally, the phone offers what it calls Moto Unplugged: Enable this software to only be able to receive text messages, phone calls and use your camera to help you focus on the task at hand.

Primed For Excellent Graphics And Sounds

Colors look rich and vivid on the device, whether I’m casually streaming Frankenstein or booting up a nostalgic game of Roller Coaster Tycoon. Major gaming titles look excellent on this screen, though keep in mind that it gets a little toasty under the most demanding workloads. The phone ships with speakers by Bose and has Dolby Atmos integrations—nice perks when watching movies and listening to music.

Integration for Perplexity Users

In addition to Google Gemini integrations, the phone also ships with Perplexity. You must install it to make it your main AI agent, but for those who use this AI software as your main agent, it’s a welcome addition. I also connected the phone to my Viture Beast XR glasses and was pleased to find I could use the combination as a laptop replacement by adding a keyboard. Props to Motorola for considering users who prefer to use XR to be productive.

Smart Connect Extends Your On-The-Go Productivity—With A Catch

If you happen to need a truly cross-functional phone that works with your Windows laptop, skip all others and opt for this phone. Motorola offers Smart Connect— software meant to work with Windows laptops running Windows 10 or later. Once installed and connected to one of my favorite lightest laptops, the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Ultra Aura Edition, I could access the Razr Fold’s apps and files on the laptop using Cross Control. When the phone is unfolded and connected to my Lenovo laptop, I could use the Motorola Razr Fold as a second screen and easily and quickly transfer files.

However, it’s not perfectly fully functional. As an example, I tried to shift a window from the laptop’s display to the Razr’s screen and couldn’t. It’s also limited in compatibility, so I couldn’t pair two phones to create a giant tablet setup. But in a pinch, if you need to open an application on your laptop and a separate application on the Razr phone, it works.

While other brands got rid of the smart digital pen integrations, Motorola has gone all in, and I'm beyond thrilled that it's back. Rebecca Isaacs for Forbes

Moto Pen Ultra Helps Cement It As One Of My Favorites

Using the Moto Pen Ultra was by far the most welcome change in my workflow. In the past, I lamented incessantly that its main competitor, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, removed the S Pen in favor of a lighter, more portable build. Motorola now has a great reason to draw those power users over: The Motorola Razr Fold’s pen integrations are incredibly useful. I could take notes and sign contracts without needing to use my finger as a writing tool. Additionally, you can choose from several templates, including lined, dotted and more to craft notes or draw sketches. As a gentle reminder, this pen costs extra, on top of the $1,900 price tag.

Motorola Razr Fold: Cameras

Nice Extras Make It More User-Friendly

While the camera’s design may be a little bulky, the camera set is pretty powerful. While you can point and snap photos, the portrait feature delves a little deeper into settings. You can choose different focal lengths shown in numbers, including 24mm (full view), 35mm (wide), 50mm (standard) and 85mm (close up). Tapping on them gives you a brief albeit necessary learning curve. While it may look more complicated than Samsung’s 2x zoom, as an amateur photographer, I found using these numbers to be a lot easier and preferable. The rest of the cameras and video settings use the standard 2x, 3x and 6x zoom.

The cameras capture details well, including glaze spots on a blue vase. Rebecca Isaacs for Forbes

Photos look excellent and are on par with the vibrancy found in Samsung foldable phones and the details I’ve enjoyed on the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold. It takes a second for the images to complete Motorola’s post-processing software, but when it does, photos look warm and vibrant. When I tested it on a blue vase filled with Lego Lotus flowers, it included the natural glaze imperfections, which I found impressive. Darker scenes, for the most part, also process well, though with most phones I’ve tested, when your subjects are moving, expect some blur.

Video offers Motorola’s Video Enhancement Engine, an AI-powered software which adds clarity to movement and enhances colors and shadows. It also adds some color and texture depth to my fluffy tabby cat’s coat, which I really like. When I compared two videos of him taken with and without this engine enabled, I found I preferred video shot utilizing it.

Motorola Razr Fold: Battery Life

The Biggest Power Bank In A Foldable To Date

The Motorola Razr Fold sports a 6,000mAh battery, which is the largest of any foldable phone to date. For context, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 has a 4,400mAh battery, while the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold has a 5,015mAh battery. The phone lasted for hours under heavy use, during which I used it both folded and unfolded. During busy days running around New York City, I found I still had some life remaining at the end of the day.

Still, there were a handful of moments, notably when watching Netflix, when the battery would reduce heavily when unfolded. About two hours of bingeing Netflix in tablet mode—plus using the folded device as a pointer with my XR glasses—used around 8% of the battery.

Motorola Razr Fold Phone: Verdict

Built With Productivity At Its Forefront

While the market still has to wait and see what Samsung and Google debut this year, the Motorola Razr Fold is an absolute powerhouse. If you’re a worker on the go, the built-in connectivity options help personalize your working style. To that end, I would recommend it for those who want to boost productivity, but it also works well for those who game on mobile after working hours. I don’t recommend it for more social-savvy users who simply want a bigger screen; if that’s the case, I believe a Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold would be a better, and more affordable, option.

There’s also its impressive ability to connect to literally any device I tossed at it, and its extra software offerings excel for those who want a plethora of working style options. If you need a foldable phone and have a Lenovo laptop, this is an excellent phone for you. For those who like the idea of Smart Connect and Moto Unplugged, but don’t want to carry around a heavy phone, consider another option, like the clamshell-style Motorola Razr Ultra or the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra.

How I Tested The Motorola Razr Fold

I used the Motorola Razr Fold for over a month as my main device. I took calls, snapped photographs of various subjects, sent messages and compared it to the many other foldable Android phones I’ve tested, including the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold. I dove into the software, considering features like Smart Connect, and connected it to various extras like Viture The Beast XR glasses to see how they performed. To test the processor, I benchmarked the phone using Geekbench 6. I noted the score and compared numbers to other flagship Android phones on the market.

I also took photographs and captured video. I reviewed these shots on a 27-inch monitor to determine how the picture and video quality compared to its competitors. I also checked battery life to determine how long it could last before requiring a recharge.
