He studied Electronics and Communication Engineering at College of Engineering (CEG) under Anna University. During the early 1980s, when computers hardly made it to Indian classrooms, Soma learned programming through IBM mainframes and punch-card systems. After graduating in 1986, Somasegar reportedly got an opportunity to work with the Indian Space Research Organisation.
