Star Malaysia all-rounder Virandeep Singh on Tuesday pointed out how the team wasn’t even out for their Asian Games quarter-final against Bangladesh when the match was called off due to incessant rainfall in Nisshin, putting an end to their campaign at the continental event.

The abandonment of Bangladesh’s quarter-final against Malaysia on Tuesday completed a quartet of rain-hit games in the Asian Games men’s tournament. The match was called off two hours before the scheduled toss, with both teams instructed not to report to the venue.

Bangladesh advanced to the semi-finals by virtue of their higher seeding and will now face Pakistan on Thursday. Earlier in the morning, Sri Lanka also progressed after their quarter-final against Nepal was washed out.

Sri Lanka will take on India in the semi-finals.

There is, however, some good news, with the weather forecast in Nisshin looking more favourable for the semi-finals on Thursday and the medal games on Saturday, October 3.

In the 2023 edition, Bangladesh lost to India in the semi-finals but beat Pakistan in the third-place playoff to claim the bronze medal. They had won bronze in 2014 as well, while their best finish came in 2010 when they defeated Afghanistan in the final to clinch gold.

This was the fourth time since the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games that Malaysia reached the quarterfinals, but hasn’t progressed beyond that.
