Main Vaapas Aaunga is attempting a comeback of sorts, with the film collecting Rs. 1.80 crore nett approx on Wednesday, its sixth day of release. This marks an increase of over 50 per cent from its Friday opening day of Rs. 1.15 crore nett approx. The six-day running total for the Imtiaz Ali directorial stands at Rs. 10.25 crore nett approx, with the first week expected to close around Rs. 12 crore nett.
The trend is amazing, but the problem is that the level of collections is just way too low, leaving the film nowhere to go. The film is outperforming in East Punjab and Delhi-NCR due to the presence of Diljit Dosanjh and the partition backdrop. However, even here, the collections can be termed AVERAGE at best, with some plexes recording good numbers.
The film requires a miraculous turnaround, which would mean continuing the upward trajectory over the coming weekend and reaching a decent level of collections, say a Rs. 4-5 crore nett day on Sunday and then sustain on that. That is easier said than done because there will be competition from Cocktail 2, a film catering to the same audience as Main Vaapas Aaunga, followed by fresh competition arriving every subsequent week.
Imtiaz Ali doesn’t have a stellar box office record, particularly in his last couple of releases. He does command a niche audience and generally has hit soundtracks, which has given his films a respectable start, although they often falter with the trend. This time, the trend is there, but the start was just way too low. In comparison, the costs are high, and even with this trend, it may not be enough, but at least there is some positive read for now.
