Mahindra BE 6 – Why Newer Rivals Are Still Playing Catch Up

When Mahindra launched BE 6 as part of its Electric Origin SUV range, it changed expectations from an Indian electric SUV. More importantly, its Software Defined Vehicle architecture means the SUV can continue to evolve even after it leaves the showroom. When Mahindra launched BE 6 as part of its Electric Origin SUV range, it changed expectations from an Indian electric SUV. While several rivals were adapting existing platforms for electric propulsion, BE 6 arrived as a born-electric SUV with futuristic styling, rear-wheel-drive dynamics, up to 683 km claimed range, ultra-fast charging and an extensive technology package.

Nearly one and a half years later, BE 6 continues to stand out. New electric SUVs have entered the market promising advanced technology and premium features, but BE 6 retains several advantages. More importantly, its Software Defined Vehicle architecture means the SUV can continue to evolve even after it leaves the showroom.

Software Defined Vehicle That Keeps Evolving

One of the biggest differentiators of BE 6 is that it has been developed as a Software Defined Vehicle (SDV). With Firmware Over-The-Air (FOTA) capability, the vehicle’s functionality isn’t necessarily frozen at the time of purchase.

Mahindra can roll out software improvements, enhancements and even new functionality remotely. Custom Drive Modes are one example of features that can be enabled and enhanced through FOTA updates. This allows BE 6 to continue evolving during its ownership cycle without requiring a workshop visit for every update.

As vehicles become increasingly software-driven, this gives BE 6 an important advantage. It wasn’t simply launched with an extensive feature list; it was engineered with the capability to gain new experiences over time.

Spaceship From The Future

Unlike many electric SUVs that have evolved from existing ICE products, BE 6 was conceived as a born-electric SUV from day one. This clean-sheet approach allowed Mahindra to create a vehicle that looks and feels unlike most SUVs on Indian roads. Its aggressive fascia, sharply sculpted bodywork, coupe-inspired rear profile and extensive aerodynamic detailing have earned it nicknames such as the “Desi Batmobile” and “Desi Urus” among enthusiasts.

The futuristic theme continues inside. A physical separation between the driver and front passenger creates a cockpit-like environment, while the wraparound dashboard, aircraft-inspired gear selector, roof-mounted toggle switches, magnetic key fob holder and digital interfaces add to the experience.

India’s Most Premium SUV For Sportscar Lovers

BE 6 has also developed a strong appeal among performance enthusiasts. Its rear-wheel-drive architecture, up to 210 kW (282 bhp) of power, 200 km/h top speed and independent rear suspension give it a distinctly performance-oriented character. This combination helps position BE 6 as India’s most premium SUV for sportscar lovers, bringing together everyday SUV practicality with engaging rear-wheel-drive dynamics, strong performance and futuristic styling.

Most Loved On Social Media

BE 6’s unconventional design has also made it particularly popular among automotive creators. Its dramatic exterior, lighting signatures and cockpit-inspired interior naturally lend themselves to reels, photographs and cinematic content.

Mahindra has further built on this appeal with special versions such as Batman Edition, developed in collaboration with Warner Bros, and Formula E Edition, celebrating Mahindra’s global electric racing journey (Winning Tokyo E-Prix recently, their 2nd win this season in Formula E).

Still Setting The Benchmark

One of BE 6’s biggest strengths is that it didn’t simply chase trends – it helped create them. Features and technologies that are only now appearing on newer products have been part of BE 6 since its arrival. Its Software Defined Vehicle architecture takes this a step further. With FOTA capability and the potential to introduce new functionality such as Custom Drive Modes, BE 6 can continue evolving as technology progresses.

Nearly 18 months after its launch, BE 6 continues to combine futuristic design, rear-wheel-drive performance, long range, advanced technology and strong appeal among creators and enthusiasts. Rather than simply keeping pace with newer competition, it continues to demonstrate how far ahead of the curve Mahindra was when it introduced its Electric Origin SUVs.
