From classrooms to the streets, Gen Alpha is increasingly making itself heard. Students in Lucknow staged yet another protest, blocking a road over a shortage of teachers at their school. Their agitation took an unexpected turn when Minister Asim Arun’s convoy was caught in the traffic jam and the minister stopped to hear them out.
The protesting students were from Jai Prakash Narayan Sarvodaya Vidyalaya in Lucknow’s Mohan Road area. They raised concerns over the shortage of teachers and other issues affecting their education and daily life at the residential school.
The road blockade brought traffic to a standstill. Among those caught in the congestion was Social Welfare Minister Asim Arun, whose convoy could not pass through the protest site.
Instead of moving on, Arun stopped and got out of his vehicle. He spoke directly to the students, listened to their complaints and tried to understand the reasons behind their agitation.
The minister assured the students that their concerns would be looked into. On the issue of teacher vacancies, he said the matter was currently before the court and indicated that efforts would be made to pursue it and find a solution.

The students were eventually persuaded to end the road blockade and return to the school premises.
The Lucknow protest is notable not only because of the issue involved but also because of the way the students chose to raise it. Instead of restricting their complaints to the school administration, the children collectively took their grievance to a public road, forcing the authorities to respond.
The episode comes amid growing instances of school-going children publicly protesting over problems inside their educational institutions. Issues such as inadequate teachers, infrastructure, food quality and basic facilities have increasingly become triggers for student demonstrations.
This has also brought the term Gen Alpha into discussions around student activism. Broadly referring to children born in the early 2010s and later, this generation has grown up with smartphones, social media and instant access to information. The latest protest puts the spotlight back on the issue. For the students, the demand is straightforward – adequate teachers in classrooms and better functioning of their school.
For Gen Alpha, meanwhile, the message from the Lucknow road appears clear: if the classroom is not listening, the street might.
