Kolkata Airport will relocate the Bankra Mosque situated near its secondary runway and demolish the old terminal to meet safety norms and expand capacity to 40 million passengers.
The mosque is located inside the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata.
The Kolkata Airport Authority has confirmed plans to relocate the Bankra Mosque, located adjacent to the airport’s secondary runway, as part of a broader redevelopment and expansion project aimed at improving operational efficiency and increasing passenger capacity, sources told CNN-news18.
Speaking on Saturday, Airport Director Vikram Singh said the old terminal building, which served Kolkata Airport before 2013, will be demolished after this year’s Hajj operations are completed.
Runway Safety Norms Prompt Relocation
The relocation of the mosque, which is located inside the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, is expected to facilitate the redevelopment work and address longstanding operational constraints at the airport.
According to airport authorities, the Bankra Mosque is situated approximately 165 metres from the secondary runway, falling short of international aviationfsafg safety norms that require a minimum separation of 240 metres. Officials say the structure’s proximity to the runway has prevented the installation of advanced Instrument Landing Systems (ILS), limiting the airport’s operational capabilities.
Passenger Capacity Expected To Reach 40 Million
The current layout has also necessitated a shortened touchdown point on the secondary runway, restricting its use by wide-body international aircraft. Airport officials believe that relocating the mosque will help remove these limitations and allow for infrastructure upgrades that could enhance flight operations.
The demolition of the old terminal building and the subsequent redevelopment are expected to significantly boost the airport’s capacity. Authorities estimate that Kolkata Airport’s annual passenger handling capacity will increase to 40 million passengers once the project is completed.
