KL Rahul has been India’s designated wicketkeeper-batter in ODIs for quite some time, and the 34-year-old right-hander from Karnataka is set to don the gloves for the Men in Blue in the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan.
During the first-ever bilateral ODI series between India and Afghanistan, which begins on June 13 in Dharamsala, Rahul will have an opportunity to enter his name in the record books.
If Rahul scores at least 105 runs in the three-match series against Afghanistan then he will become only the third Indian after Rahul Dravid and MS Dhoni to score 2,000 or more runs in ODIs as a designated wicketkeeper-batter.
Dravid was the first Indian to achieve the milestone. He scored 2,300 runs in 73 ODIs as India’s designated wicketkeeper-batter between 1999 and 2004.
Dhoni, meanwhile, amassed 10,599 runs in 294 innings of 347 ODIs as India’s designated wicketkeeper-batter from 2004 to 2019.
