Kia has showcased Syros Flex Fuel Vehicle (FFV) Concept in India, marking the company’s first flex-fuel car for the country. The concept was displayed alongside new Carnival Hybrid and Carens CNG at Kia Sorento launch event today and demonstrates the brand’s readiness for India’s expected transition towards higher ethanol-blended fuels.
Syros Flex Fuel Concept can operate on pure petrol, pure ethanol and different ethanol-petrol blends in between. This means the powertrain is designed to accommodate fuel ranging from conventional petrol to E100. However, Kia has not announced any timeline for a production version, so the Syros FFV remains a technology demonstrator for now.
1.0L Turbo Engine Modified For Flex Fuel
Powering Syros Flex Fuel is a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder, direct-injection turbo-petrol engine. Kia has not revealed its power and torque figures. To make the engine compatible with varying concentrations of ethanol, Kia has made changes to the ECU, TCU and fuel system.
Interestingly, the transmission is also different from the regular Syros turbo-petrol. While the standard model uses a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic, Syros Flex Fuel Concept gets a 6-speed torque-converter automatic. These modifications allow the vehicle to adapt to different petrol-ethanol mixtures.
Government Push For Higher Ethanol Blends
Kia’s flex-fuel demonstration comes as the Indian government continues to push towards greater use of ethanol as an automotive fuel. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has been a prominent advocate for flex-fuel technology, with reducing India’s dependence on imported crude oil among the key objectives.
In May 2026, the government notified standards covering higher ethanol-petrol blends, followed by the approval of regulations for E100-compatible vehicles in June. Syros Flex Fuel Concept therefore provides a glimpse at how Kia could respond if higher ethanol blends become more widely available in India.
More Carmakers Preparing Flex-Fuel Vehicles
Kia isn’t alone in developing flex-fuel technology for India. Maruti Suzuki has already launched Wagon R Flex Fuel, while several other manufacturers are working on similar powertrains. Toyota has previously demonstrated flex-fuel technology in India, while Tata Motors is expected to introduce a flex-fuel vehicle by late 2026 or early 2027. Hyundai, MG and Mahindra are also among manufacturers exploring or developing flex-fuel solutions.
For Kia, Syros is a logical candidate to demonstrate the technology as it already offers a compact turbo-petrol powertrain that can be adapted for alternative fuels. However, the company has not confirmed a production launch for Syros Flex Fuel. For now, the concept signals Kia’s intent to prepare for a future where Indian vehicles could be required to operate on substantially higher ethanol blends than today’s E20 fuel.
