Karuppu ended its first week at the Indian box office with Rs. 129.50 crore approx, adding Rs. 9 crore approx on Thursday. There was a 25 per cent drop from Wednesday, which is a bit excessive, but some of that is attributable to the release of Drishyam 3. Considering how well the weekdays held, the drop is acceptable, with Thursday being about half of the opening Friday, which is a strong hold for a South Indian film.

The hold was better in Tamil Nadu, which declined by just under 20 per cent. The Thursday gross of Rs. 6.50 crore approx in the state is the third highest of all time, excluding holidays, just behind Ponniyin Selvam I and Vikram, moving ahead of Leo. The first week in the state amounted to Rs. 82 crore approx, is going to hit Rs. 100 crore mark over the second weekend, possibly tomorrow. The film is on course to collect over Rs. 150 crore in the state in its full run.
Karuppu has ended the drought for Suriya, and the timing could not be better for the Tamil film industry. Vijay has stepped away from cinema to pursue politics. Rajinikanth is old, and Ajith isn’t too prolific either, with interest in a racing career. In such times, the rebound of Suriya is a godsend as the Tamil film industry is in dire need of stars to headline bigger films.
