The actress recently revealed that many heroines rejected her role in the film as they did not want to ‘compete’ with Madhuri Dixit.
In a recent chat with India Today, Karisma Kapoor revealed, “When Dil To Pagal Hai was being made, no actress wanted to do the role opposite Madhuri. Nobody wanted to dance with her and compete with her in a dance face-off." Madhuri Dixit is regarded as one of the best and most graceful dancers in Bollywood.
Reflecting on her role as Nisha, Karisma said, “I think cinema changed with Nisha’s character. She was a heroine, but not the conventional one. She was the one with whom the hero did not love. He was rejecting her, and the audience could actually see her pain."
“I found that very different and very challenging. Even today, I get goosebumps thinking about it because, normally, the hero is supposed to love the heroine. Here was a girl wondering, ‘Why is this happening to me? I love this guy so much.’ That emotional journey was something very special," she added.
For the unversed, the film revolves around the love lives of the members of a musical troupe, in which two dancers get entangled in a love triangle with their choreographer. The romantic drama, which originally released in 1997, was directed by legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra.
Dil To Pagal Hai ruled the box office in 1997 and emerged as the highest-grossing Bollywood film of the year. The film also ruled award shows and won three National Awards, seven Filmfare Awards, and several other awards. Known for its soulful music, mesmerising dance sequences, and unforgettable dialogues, Dil To Pagal Hai remains a cult favourite among fans of Bollywood romance.
