When Kareena Kapoor tied the knot with Saif Ali Khan, it was ace designer Ritu Kumar, who had painstakingly restored an heirloom ensemble for her. That beautiful garment once belonging to the Begum of Bhopal, was gifted to Kareena’s mother-in-law, who had worn it on her own wedding day. This is probably why this collaboration with Kumar is not just about a new collection. For Kareena, it carries a longer, most intimate history.

Nonetheless, the actor has now come on board as the muse for the designer’s latest couture collection, bringing together two names that have long been associated with Indian fashion, cinema and an unmistakable sense of timeless glamour. The collaboration, designed by Amrish Kumar, has been presented as a meeting of two enduring icons, celebrating craftsmanship and culture.

In a post, Kareena wrote, “A beautiful piece that once belonged to the Begum of Bhopal was gifted to my mother-in-law, who wore it on her own wedding day. Years later, it was lovingly restored by Ritu Kumar for me to wear on mine. Knowing the story it carried, and then getting to add my own chapter to it, made my bond with the brand incredibly personal and special. So this was never just a campaign for me. It was about emotion, memories, heritage and a beautiful sense of belonging."

That sense of continuity also informs the new campaign, which places Kareena against pieces that draw heavily from India’s architectural and artisanal traditions while being cut for a contemporary wardrobe. One of the key looks featured is the Jaisalmer Jacket and Skirt, inspired by the architectural heritage of Rajasthan. Traditional block prints have been reinterpreted through a modern silhouette, while intricate aari, tikki and zardozi embroidery add layers of texture and detail. According to the house, the ensemble represents more than 600 hours of artisanal craftsmanship.

On Kareena, the look is regal and modern, with the focus being on the intricate workmanship (and Bebo’s face card, which is unmatched). Vintage Schiaparelli earrings and polki buttons by Birdhichand complete the ensemble.

The campaign itself brings together a sizeable creative team. Produced by Anil Kapoor Film and Communication Network, it is co-produced, styled and developed with Rhea Kapoor, with Karan Boolani as producer. Photographer The Badly Drawn Boy and videographer Kettle Love capture the campaign, while Shereen leads the styling.
