The prime accused in the alleged molestation and harassment of a Class 10 girl and her male friend was shot in the leg during a police encounter on Tuesday (September 22, 2026) in Bihar’s Jamui district.

When police caught him after a chase, he disclosed his name as Hare Ram Yadav, and he also told police that the other accused, Nandan Yadav, is hiding nearby.
Three minor accused persons were apprehended on Monday (September 21, 2026).
The prime accused in the alleged molestation and harassment of a Class 10 girl and her male friend was shot in the leg during a police encounter on Tuesday (September 22, 2026) in Bihar’s Jamui district. Nandan Yadav sustained injuries in his leg during the encounter, while co-accused Hare Ram Yadav injured his leg while trying to escape from the spot, for which he was later admitted in a hospital for treatment.
Earlier on September 21, three minors were apprehended as accused in the incident. On Tuesday morning (September 22, 2026), the person who had taken the video that went viral on social media, Ramshish Choudhary, was taken into custody, police said. “All persons involved in the incident have been arrested, and local police is interrogating them,” said Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) K.S. Anupam at the State police headquarters in Patna.
Ms. Anupam confirmed that Nandan Yadav was the prime accused and he was shown in the video with an orange towel wrapped around his face and crudely lifting the minor girl forcibly in his hands.

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary, meanwhile, said “all the accused persons involved in the incident have been identified” and assured everyone that “strict action will be taken against them”. “The government is working to ensure that such incidents do not happen again,” said Minister for Rural Development and Information and Public Relations Shrawan Kumar.

While addressing media persons in Jamui, Superintendent of Police (SP) Vishwajeet Dayal on Tuesday (September 22, 2026) said five persons have been arrested in the case.
Indulged in illicit activities: police
Both Nandan Yadav and Hare Ram Yadav are 25-year-olds from Pratappur village in Jamui district and said to be casual tractor drivers with a history of involvement in illegal sand transportation, bootlegging and other illicit activities in the area, he said. “Police are digging up their current antecedents,” said Mr. Dayal.
Asked how the prime accused was arrested, the Jamui SP said: “On a tip-off, a police team had reached a riverbank on the outskirts of Pratappur village on Tuesday morning when a person, upon spotting police personnel, started fleeing the spot. When police caught him after a chase, he disclosed his name as Hare Ram Yadav, and he also told police that the other accused, Nandan Yadav, is hiding nearby. While trying to escape, Hare Ram Yadav got injured in his leg. As police spotted Nandan Yadav hiding behind tall bushes and grass, he fired upon the police, and a brief exchange ensued, following which he was arrested with a shot in the leg,” the police officer explained, while adding that both the accused persons have been admitted in Jamui Sadar town hospital for better medical assistance. “After investigation, more arrests can be made in the incident,” he said.
Earlier, after a video of the incident had gone viral on social media, the Jamui police had formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by senior police officer Deepti Monali. Three minor accused persons were apprehended on Monday (September 21, 2026). The incident happened on Saturday (September 19, 2026) when the girl and her friend, both students of Class 10, were returning on a two-wheeler from Marwa Hill after their coaching classes got over in Jamui, about 150 km from Patna. They were intercepted by a group of men on a deserted Jamui-Lakhisarai road, where they harassed both youngsters, and the girl was groped and lifted forcibly by one of them.
After two days, a video of the incident went viral on September 21 and police lodged an FIR under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act at Jamui police station.
Later, the incident triggered a political slugfest between Opposition and ruling NDA leaders at the Centre and State. Meanwhile, an eight-member team of the Congress party’s State unit will visit Jamui on September 23 to ensure “justice to the victims”, while youth Congress leaders burnt effigies of Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary in Patna on Tuesday (September 22, 2026) demanding his resignation over the incident.
