In a major setback to efforts to ease tensions in West Asia and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, Iran on Monday has ruled out any future negotiations with the Donald Trump’s administration, saying it will wait until the US President’s term ends on January 20, 2029, according to Iranian outlets and a post by an adviser to Parliament Speaker Ghalibaf.
Majid Shakeri, adviser to Ghalibaf, said Trump would not reach an agreement with Tehran and that Iran would continue with its current approach until his term ends.
“Trump will not reach an agreement with us. We will accompany him until his term ends," Shakeri said.
Iran Says No Deal With Trump
Shakeri also outlined what he described as Iran’s approach to dealing with Washington.
“The path to victory is neither fighting nor a deal — it is managing the process of neither war nor peace, up to the point of victory," he posted.
He said publicly confirming negotiations with the US would be “sheer folly", arguing that Iran’s approach should involve denial, ambiguity and “strategic patience".
Iran’s conditions remain unchanged, including $300 billion in compensation, the release of frozen assets and the withdrawal of US forces. Tehran has also linked the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to the acceptance of its demands.
The latest position comes a day after Iran ruled out an immediate resumption of negotiations with the United States.
Tehran Rules Out Immediate Talks
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Sunday that Tehran would not return to negotiations until Washington addressed what Iran describes as violations of a memorandum of understanding (MoU).
Araghchi said Iran is currently not holding direct negotiations with the US. Instead, messages are being exchanged through intermediaries who are trying to create conditions for talks to resume.
“We currently have no negotiations with the United States. Intermediaries are still making efforts to find ways to resume negotiations," Araghchi said.
He said Tehran would not consider restarting negotiations until Washington stopped what Iran calls violations of the MoU and compensated it for those breaches.
“This is not called ‘negotiation’, it’s an ‘exchange of messages’," Iran’s position stated, while intermediaries continue efforts to create the grounds for negotiations again.
Iran is seeking reparations for war-related damage and what it says were violations of the MoU.
Hormuz To Stay Closed
Iran’s position on negotiations comes as Tehran continues to insist that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until the US accepts its demands.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said on Sunday that the strategic waterway would not be reopened until Washington accepts all of Tehran’s conditions.
“Our current strategy is to maintain this strait until the enemy accepts all our conditions," Guards spokesman Hossein Mohebi said, according to Iranian state television.
He added that the strait was now “a theatre of war for us and not just a waterway".
Iran’s Supreme National Security Council has separately said the waterway will remain closed until the US “corrects its behaviour".
